Welcome to the Duke Math Jam! We are very fortunate to have several representatives from Duke University with us tonight to tell us about math, life, and admissions at Duke.
rrusczyk 2013-11-13 19:32:01
Before I introduce our guests, let me explain about this classroom. This room is moderated, which means that all your questions and comments come to the moderators. We may share your comments with the whole room if we so choose.
rrusczyk 2013-11-13 19:32:07
For now, please hold your questions -- we'll let you know when you can start asking questions. Also, due to the number of people attending tonight, we may not be able to get to every question.
rrusczyk 2013-11-13 19:32:14
Now let me introduce our guests for the evening. (Their usernames are in bold as I introduce them.)
rrusczyk 2013-11-13 19:32:17
Lenny Ng (lng) is an Associate Professor in the Math Department. Some of you may know Lenny from his success at the IMO (three medals) and the Putnam (three-time Fellow). I know him from the Math Olympiad Summer Program, which he attended in eighth grade when I was a senior (and that was the last time I knew as much math as he did).
rrusczyk 2013-11-13 19:32:32
We also have with us David Kraines (dkraines), also an Associate Professor in the Math Department, and Nikki Baskin (DukeAdmissions), the Assistant Director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
rrusczyk 2013-11-13 19:32:36
We also have with us two current Duke undergrads, Daniel Vitek (Teki-Teki) and David Hemminger (soccer22).
rrusczyk 2013-11-13 19:32:47
Now, I'll turn the floor over to our guests from Duke!
lng 2013-11-13 19:32:51
Hello everyone and welcome to this year's Duke Math Jam on AoPS! Thanks to Richard for the (overly kind, in my case) introductions. As in previous years, we've assembled a variety of people here at Duke to try to answer any questions that you might have -- about Duke, or the admissions process, or the math program here, or the Duke Math Meet, etc.
lng 2013-11-13 19:32:59
Before we get started, some basic information about Duke (copy-and-pasted from previous sessions).
lng 2013-11-13 19:33:06
Duke University is located in Durham, North Carolina, in the technology-heavy Research Triangle Park area. (This area is said to have the highest concentration of Ph.D.s anywhere in the country!) The university is a fantastic research center, and we're very proud of our undergraduates in math particularly. Duke has historically placed high on the Putnam exam, including first place finishes in 1993 and 1996, and we place pretty consistently in the top 10. Among other things, we've had our share of Putnam Fellows -- Melanie Wood, Craig Gentry, and Jeffrey Vanderkam.
lng 2013-11-13 19:33:12
In case you'd like general information about Duke, there's a lot of useful info about Duke admissions at http://admissions.duke.edu/ and about Duke math at http://www.math.duke.edu/ .
lng 2013-11-13 19:33:19
We'll try to answer as many questions as we can. Apologies in advance if we don't get to yours -- but also please feel free to resubmit if it's been a while and we haven't gotten to your question.
lng 2013-11-13 19:33:25
In the event that we don't answer all your questions, AoPS has transcripts of past Duke Math Jams (2010, 2011, 2012) that you're certainly welcome to look through.
lng 2013-11-13 19:33:31

I think that's about it. Let's get started! Please feel free to submit questions now, and also thanks in advance for your patience -- it may take us a short bit to start responding.

Teki-Teki 2013-11-13 19:40:29
I'm from Raleigh, so Duke is pretty close to home for me. The climate is pretty nice, especially in the spring and fall. Right now the campus is gorgeous - there's a reason people call Duke the Gothic Wonderland.
In addition, the campus is rather safe; it's towards the edge of Durham, and it's surrounded by trees.
Finally, there are a bunch of opportunities to get off campus and go explore Durham. There are great restaurants, arts venues, and other attractions within walking distance from Duke's campus.

The admissions office wants to see strong grades - have you challenged yourself with your courses and done well in those classes. We also want a sense of engagement -- w/ideas, with other people, with a community...An inclination to take full advantage of the talents and abilities you've been given...An interest in being challenged; a healthy ambition..The ability and desire to make a difference...Creativity,.curiosity and a sense of fun...An openness to opportunities.

Duke has a lot of great opportunities for middle school students! (Chelsea/9th grade/SoCal) What makes Duke different from other top schools such as Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford?
lng 2013-11-13 19:47:51
I've spent time at all of those places and certainly don't have anything bad to say about any of them -- they're all fantastic. But one nice thing about Duke that maybe sets it apart a bit from some of the other top tier research institutions is the feel -- it's really like a liberal arts college in some ways. Class sizes are quite small. About 90% of our classes are 30 students or fewer, and 80% are 20 students or fewer. Students get a lot of opportunity to interact one-on-one with the faculty.

Trinity students may be granted up to two elective course credits toward the degree requirement of 34 course credits for any combination of AP, IB or pre-matriculation credit.Pratt evaluates AP and IB credit as Trinity College does, but awards transfer credit to qualified students for college-level course work with a grade of at least C- prior to matriculation.Info here: http://admissions.duke.edu/application/overview#credit-and-placement
Teki-Teki 2013-11-13 19:49:19
As a personal anecdote regarding class sizes at Duke, at most two of the courses that I've taken here (of about thirty or so) have had more than 30 students.

Teki-Teki 2013-11-13 19:52:33
You can see a list of the current semester's math courses at http://fds.duke.edu/db/aas/math/ugrad/courses.html. A list of all the math courses that Duke offers is available at (PDF warning) http://registrar.duke.edu/sites/default/files/bulletins/2013-14/Undergrad/ugb2013-14.pdf.
Duke's offerings in mathematics for undergraduates are significantly better than at a lot of liberal arts colleges, because we're lucky enough to have a (rather good!) graduate program in mathematics. It's certainly possible (both David and I have done it) to take a lot of graduate courses in mathematics as an undergraduate.

Sharon/11th/Cheshire, CT     Is there a medical program at Duke?
Teki-Teki 2013-11-13 19:56:09
We have an attached (world-renowned) medical school. While we don't offer a pre-med major, a large chunk of our biomedical engineering and biology majors -- two of the five most popular, as above -- pursue pre-med courses of study and apply to medical schools. It's also common for undergraduates to work and do research in the medical center as undergraduates.

We appreciate your interest in Duke...we always say that admission to Duke is an art and not a science! What you should do now is do the best job you can as a student. Sonnhard/10th/PA How generous is financial aid? Are there any merit-based scholarships?
DukeAdmissions 2013-11-13 19:59:55
Duke is strongly committed to financial aid and the principle that a student's financial resources should not be a barrier to enrollment. We meet full demonstrated financial need for every one of our students.
DukeAdmissions 2013-11-13 20:00:01
For U.S. citizens and permanent residents, we are "need-blind," which means that applicants are accepted based on their merits, regardless of their ability to pay for college. We assume that you'd like a merit based scholarship, so all applicants are considered for scholarships.

Duke admissions does not have a preference for IBs or APs..depends on what is offered at your school and how you learn best. In our applicant pool, the students who take the best advantage of dual enrollment courses or local college courses are doing so because they have outpaced their school's offerings or want more of a challenge.

Admission is highly selective for both colleges. You can see the Profile in the "sticky" section for the admit rate breakdown. For Pratt, though, we are really looking for an engineering "fit". Pratt students typically are very strong in math & sci and their extracurricular activities match their interest in engineering fields.

can we get brownie points for things like eagle scout, black belt, etc...
Teki-Teki 2013-11-13 20:38:47
Extracurriculars of all varieties can help your application! If you want one data point, I am an Eagle Scout and I got into Duke (somehow...)

Do you require a certain number of people of each gender/ethnicity/background, or is it all based on test scores?
DukeAdmissions 2013-11-13 20:39:31
No certain numbers are required, and Duke admission is not based all on test scores. The classes you've taken, grades you have earned, activities. recommendations, writing, and optional parts like an artistic supplement, interview etc = our holistic admission process.

Do you need teacher/counselor recommendations for acceptance?
Teki-Teki 2013-11-13 20:39:45
Two teacher recommendations and one counselor recommendation are required for the application. One extra application is also accepted.

Arnav/7th/FL Do you give any importance or weight for being a Valedictorian? Or you look at the classes the student has taken?
DukeAdmissions 2013-11-13 20:42:25
If your school provides class rank, we pay attention to it, but your courses (and the rigor of those courses) + grades are what we consider very closely.
gkhsieh 2013-11-13 20:42:49
On average, how much does it cost for one year?
Teki-Teki 2013-11-13 20:42:52
