Welcome to the MIT Math Jam! The Math Jam will start at 7:30pm ET (4:30pm PT).
angie414 2015-10-06 19:28:22
I adMIT I MITe be a little excited!
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:28:24
I bet you're not alone.
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:31:15
Before we get started, I have a quick note about this classroom. This room is moderated, which means that all your comments come to the moderators. We may share your comments with the whole room if we so choose. Our guests from MIT will let you know when it's time to start asking questions.
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:31:38
We are very fortunate to have Matt McGann, Chris Peterson, and Steven Johnson here tonight to tell us all about life, admissions, and math at MIT.
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:31:47
Matt McGann (MattMcGannMIT) is MIT's Director of Admissions. He is also a 2000 graduate of MIT.
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:31:51
This is Matt's 11th year hosting a session here at AoPS to talk about MIT. When he hosted the first session, he was an Assistant Director of Admissions. Since then, we at AoPS have also had the good fortune to spend time with Matt here in San Diego, on visits to Boston, and as our guest at the USAMO Awards Ceremony. So, we're particularly happy to introduce him tonight as MIT's Director of Admissions, a position we at AoPS like to think he earned by being the first admissions officer to recognize how awesome AoPS students are.
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:32:23
Chris Peterson (MITChris) is Assistant Director for Talented Outreach at MIT Admissions, where he oversees MIT's recruitment and evaluation of makers, entrepreneurs, and academic superstars. College football fans will recognize him as MIT's Nick Saban.
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:32:38
Steven Johnson (stevengcj) is a professor of applied mathematics at MIT and coordinates undergraduate math research. He also received undergraduate degrees from MIT in 1995 and a Ph.D in Physics in 2001.
rrusczyk 2015-10-06 19:32:50
Now, I'll turn the floor over to Matt, Chris, and Steven.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:32:56
Thanks! Hello, and welcome to the 11th (!) annual MIT Math Jam on AoPS. After all that time, I was finally able to visit the AoPS offices in California last month, and it was as awesome as you would expect! Thanks to rrusczyk, LauraZed, and the whole AoPS team for hosting us tonight. We love AoPS and AoPSers!
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:33:11
Prof. Steven Johnson, admissions officer Chris Peterson and I will field questions shortly. If you'd like to pose a question to us, I'd request that you post them in this format:
Name / Grade / State-or-Country: Question
e.g.
Matt / 12th grade / NY: How awesome is MIT?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:33:29
I'll note that between Prof. Johnson, Chris, and myself, we have 6 MIT degrees between us! (2/3 of them are Prof. Johnson alone!)
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:33:42
Before we get to the questions, let me tell you a little bit about MIT.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:33:53
Many questions can be answered on MIT websites, including the MIT homepage http://web.mit.edu and the MIT Admissions homepage http://www.mitadmissions.org. Also, you can check the transcripts from our previous 10 Math Jams at http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/school/mathjams-transcripts.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:34:24
Prof. Johnson, Chris and I will answer questions for one hour. We will try to answer as many questions as we can, but if history is any indication there will be many more questions than we can possibly field. (There are more than 200 people here right now!)
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:34:35
MIT is a private research university with a focus on math, science, engineering, and other analytical disciplines. This year's incoming freshman class is 1107 students. Of those, 53% are male, and 47% female. The largest represented state is California. Among all MIT students, all 50 states and over 80 countries are represented.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:34:54
For those of you interested in majoring in math -- the math department is pretty exciting. The many, many classes are taught by some of the top math faculty in the world. Most students will do math (or other) research during their time as an undergraduate. Prof. Johnson can tell you more.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:35:08
Also, I don't have any good way to back this up, but I believe that MIT has more International Math Olympiad medalists in its undergraduate student body than any university in the world. However, most MIT math undergraduates don't come in with any such distinction; a pretty fair number of math students have never even heard of the AMC.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:35:21
About admissions: last year, we admitted approximately 1 of every 13 applicants. There is no formula or secret to admissions. We look for students who are well matched with MIT's culture and mission in a holistic admissions process.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:35:30
We certainly look for students with good grades in challenging classes as well as strong test scores, but beyond that we are also looking for students who are excited about learning and discovery, are interested in solving new, challenging problems, like to collaborate with others, take initiative, appreciate the humanities and arts, and are involved with their communities beyond the classroom doing things they enjoy.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:35:42
We can answer more questions about MIT life, math, admissions, or anything else. I'd like to meet you with your question, so if you could preface your question with your name, grade, and location, that would be great.
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:35:49
For example:
Matt / 12th grade / NY: How awesome is MIT?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:35:57
Please be patient; we will get to as many questions as we can. Here we go!
Starstriker33 2015-10-06 19:36:13
Andrew / 7th Grade / USA: How can I be accepted into MIT for college?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:36:21
Applying helps!
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:36:36
That was to Andrew; I'm not sure how the others came in here, but yolo
dillmw 2015-10-06 19:38:07
Dillon / 8th grade / NJ: Does MIT cover astrobiology?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:38:09
Dillon, there are some research groups at MIT working on astrobiology, and there are courses you can take which cover this topic. See e.g. http://summons.mit.edu/teaching/
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:39:27
Hang on, everyone - having some problems passing questions
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:39:40
*star wars voice* there's...too many of them!
PauloS 2015-10-06 19:39:53
Paulo / 11th grade / NJ: How did the police car get onto the dome?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:39:55
Students assembled the police car facsimile (it was not a real car) in pieces on the dome (http://hacks.mit.edu/Hacks/by_year/1994/cp_car/). I remember being in a hallway at 1am that year when a lot of students passed by carrying mysterious packages. The next day I found out about the car!
hijames 2015-10-06 19:40:12
james/ 12th/ ON, Canada: is one required to declare major upon entrance, or could one apply for general accepance?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:40:32
james - when you apply to MIT, you apply to all of MIT, and when you are admitted, you are admitted to all of MIT
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:40:40
you can't declare a major until the end of freshman year
pad 2015-10-06 19:41:25
Ram/ 5th grade/ USA: How come you know about AoPS?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:41:29
@ram Matt knows everything
hijames 2015-10-06 19:41:33
James/12th grade/ON, Canada: How does MIT calculate GPA for international students?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:41:37
Hi James -- we don't recalculate GPAs. We read a transcript considering the appropriate context. For example, we know that grading is different in Ontario than in most US states, and that the curriculum can be quite different, too. We see plenty of students from Ontario (and many places in the world) and know how to evaluate your transcript. Overall, we are hoping for strong grades in a rigorous curriculum.
Arctangent 2015-10-06 19:42:10
Enzo / 10th grade / NC: If we enter MIT with an advanced mathematical background, is there a way to place out of courses and still receive credit that contributes toward your degree?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:42:11
@Enzo - yes, through the Advanced Standing Examinations: http://web.mit.edu/registrar/classrooms/exams/ase_exams.html
simon1221 2015-10-06 19:42:32
Simon/ 10th Grade/ IL: What kind of music program is there at MIT?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:42:33
Simon, a tiny number of students major in music (http://mta.mit.edu/music-major), but a large fraction of students participate in some other form: there are many performance groups (a traditional concert choir, orchestra, etc., but many other groups as well), many courses (e.g. in music composition), and other opportunities on campus. I see a lot of math majors who take music seriously.
chemistrygirl 2015-10-06 19:42:39
Elaine / 9th grade / NJ: Does MIT like academically well-rounded students?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:42:41
@Elaine we like students who are well-rounded, very-pointy, and every shape in between.
Octophi 2015-10-06 19:43:12
Joey/ 11th grade/ AL: What's your favorite part about MIT?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:43:13
@Joey - the people, hands down.
jh235 2015-10-06 19:44:06
John/12th grade/IN: You superscore ACT right? So, when you say that your mid 50 ACT range is 33-35 is that for superscored scores as well?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:44:09
I know there will be lots of questions about test scores, most of which can be answered here: http://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/stats. For this question, the answer is, the composites listed are not superscored.
Temp456 2015-10-06 19:44:16
Alicia / 11th grade / NC: I've heard (not sure if this is completely true) that a lot of people in MIT are just very focused in their math/science fields. But although I like math, I'm also veeery interested in foreign languages. So do you see a lot of that kind of thing at MIT?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:44:20
@Alicia- We have great programs outside of STEM as well. I earned my graduate degree from the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and we also have the oldest school of Architecture and Planning in the USA.
Alanshenkerman 2015-10-06 19:44:31
Alan/ 11th grade / NJ: How difficult is the course-load of a typical math major at MIT?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:44:32
Alan, a typical math major takes 4-5 courses per semester; usually 2-3 of these are math courses, or math-related courses (e.g. computer science). The math major at MIT is very flexible (essentially, any 8 math courses, 6 of which have to be advanced), so students take it in very different directions, either very pure or very applied (often combining it with a second major).
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:44:52
@Alicia (again) you should check out https://mitgsl.mit.edu/ to see what we offer, + full cross-registration with Harvard and Wellesley (who may offer more languages)
MatrixDragon 2015-10-06 19:45:59
Isha/11th grade/ IL : What is the most popular major?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:46:01
Computer Science & Engineering. You can see all of the majors listed, with enrollments, here: http://web.mit.edu/registrar/stats/yrpts/index.html
Jakeskater18 2015-10-06 19:46:05
Jake / 7 grade / FL/ I am in precalculus this year and want to know what sequence of math courses I should take to be competitive for admission.
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:46:06
@Jake - if you're already in precalc then you're good to go. At a minimum, we require calculus. About half the students coming in to MIT will have calculus, and about half will have more advanced mathematics. I'd recommend you just continue to do what you love, whatever it is, which in this case sounds like it may be math!
logicteen 2015-10-06 19:46:57
Deirdre/12th Grade/CO: Is there reason to apply earlier than the deadline? For instance, if you are applying EA,would there be any advantage or disadvantage if you submitted today instead of a few days before November 1st?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:46:58
@Deirdre - nope, just apply when is convenient for you in terms of cycles, and make sure you hit all the deadlines for that cycle.
youngblood4ever 2015-10-06 19:47:41
Kriti / 11th grade / CA: I've heard that you don't declare a major if you are admitted to MIT, so is everyone able to take the classes they want to?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:47:42
Kriti, there are some required courses that everyone has to take (Calculus, Biology, etcetera), and you eventually have to declare a major (usually by sophomore year, although you can delay or switch majors easily), and every major has different requirements. However, things are quite flexible in general; although you have to take certain courses, you can change the order or (sometimes) substitute one course for another. And there is usually plenty of room in your courses to take electives (courses that you choose entirely on your own).
munugala 2015-10-06 19:47:55
Hrishikesh Munugala/ 12th Grade/ MI: Does Sloan offer a BBA program?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:47:57
Every major -- including music and philosophy -- leads to a Bachelor of Science (S.B.) degree. That also includes the Management Science major in MIT's Sloan School of Management.
sandrakong8 2015-10-06 19:48:56
Sandra / 11th / TX: How is MIT beneficial for students hoping to become doctors?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:48:58
@Sandra - that's a good question! One of our bloggers, Chris Su, who is in med school right now, has written a lot about that. I think the general feeling is that MIT prepares you extremely well for the rigor and research of med school, as well as a foundation of science/math problem solving and like general field knowledge.
munugala 2015-10-06 19:49:49
Hrishikesh Munugala/ 12th Grade/ MI: I heard there is an internship course program where I can intern at a company for a semester, is this true? If so that is so awesome!
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:49:50
@Hrishikesh - sure, one of our bloggers is off this semester interning at Amazon, and another just came back from a term at Apple.
satpreet 2015-10-06 19:49:54
Kumar/9th grade/CT - Does MIT cover astrophysics?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:49:56
Kumar, yes, MIT has a very strong astrophysics department and some excellent courses, at both the graduate and undergraduate level. (It's a fun subject to take after you've taken a few physics courses, because it combines lots of different kinds of physics at many different scales.)
Priyanka23 2015-10-06 19:50:05
Priyanka/ 9th grade/ GA: what type of scholarships do you offer?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:50:06
All students with financial need are given need-based scholarships that meets their full financial need. For example, for families who earn less than $75,000 a year, we guarantee a need-based scholarship that covers at least the cost of tuition, and usually more. You can read more here: http://mitadmissions.org/afford/basics

Quick note: There will be a complete transcript of this Math Jam available tomorrow here: http://artofproblemsolving.com/school/mathjams-transcripts
UltimateChampion1235 2015-10-06 19:50:38
Arjun/10th grade/CA: Is there a major for comp sci and math?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:50:42
Arjun, yes, see https://math.mit.edu/academics/undergrad/major/course18c
ilikepie2003 2015-10-06 19:50:45
Christina/ 7th grade/ MA: What type of people do you consider to be MIT material? Do they have to be strong in math/science?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:50:46
@Christina - strong in math and science, good at working with other students, lots of initiative, take care of things they need to do, want to solve problems and make the world a better place.
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:50:51
Many students also double-major in computer-science and math
RJ2015 2015-10-06 19:51:24
Rishab/ 9th grade/ FL: What do you recommend we should do to stand out and to make our application eye catching.
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:51:26
@Rishab - I don't recommend trying to stand out. Just be yourself and do the things you love to do. It's the best way to spend high school and will also make you the best applicant you can be to MIT.
guluguluga 2015-10-06 19:53:34
William/ 9th grade / USA: When’s the latest time you can declare your major?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:53:35
William, in theory you can change your major any time until the 8th week of the spring term before you graduate. In practice, it becomes harder and harder to switch to an entirely different major after the end of your sophomore year, unless you've been taking courses in the other major all along, or unless you want to delay graduation.
ompatel99 2015-10-06 19:53:46
Ohm / 11th grade / TN: I know that MIT is looking for holistic students, but how much of a role does success in math competitions like the AMC / AIME play in our applications?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:53:47
I am seeing many questions that are a variant of this -- how are AMC/AIME/USAMO/IMO considered, what level of achievement do I need to be admitted, etc. In short: we are looking for students who are well matched with the MIT mission and culture. And as a research university focused on math/science/engineering/etc, students with talents and achievements in math are definitely valued. We know all about the AMC, IMO, etc, and those achievements will be considered accordingly. Overall, though, don't focus too much on math competitions. My hope is that your match with MIT will come out strongly simply through your love of learning.
GeorgCantor 2015-10-06 19:54:04
Lily / 10th / TN: A lot of people I know have said that MIT's large class sizes make it difficult to connect with teachers. Can you combat this claim?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:54:09
@Lily - Professor Johnson may be able to handle this better than me, but I can tell you, as a Lecturer in CMS, that the classes I teach are all 12-18 students, and that people who teach at MIT *love* to work with their students (because they are the best in the world, obviously)
youngblood4ever 2015-10-06 19:55:14
Kriti / 11th grade / CA: Are there entrepreneurship opportunities at MIT?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:55:16
@#youngbloodkriti - Sure, you should check out the Trust Center @ MIT (https://entrepreneurship.mit.edu/), which offers free startup advising with no-equity stake.
Gwena 2015-10-06 19:55:49
Piper/10th grade/MA How does MIT handle homeschooled students? Are there any things that you recommend doing as a homeschooled student for the application process or in general?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:55:50
We see many homeschooled applicants, and many of our best students were homeschooled. Generally speaking, there's not anything you need to do differently. We provide this advice on our website http://mitadmissions.org/apply/prepare/homeschool (this page is largely based on one of my blog entries, FWIW)
Gwena 2015-10-06 19:56:02
Piper/10th grade/MA Where do MIT students normally go after completing their bachelor's degree?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:56:03
@Piper - about 50% go to industry, and 50% (eventually) to grad school. You can see detailed data here: https://gecd.mit.edu/resources/survey-data.
munugala 2015-10-06 19:56:21
Hrishikesh/ 12th Grade/ MI: Is MIT considered a feeder school for top companies such as Apple and Google? I'm asking since almost every one of my friends from MIT is at one of the top tech companies.
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:56:31
@Hrishikesh - same thing, check out where MIT students go on to work here: https://gecd.mit.edu/resources/survey-data
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:56:44
We are over 300 participants now, and there are many, many questions. We're doing the best we can!
jrexmo 2015-10-06 19:56:58
Jack/ 11th grade/ OR: Can undergrads take graduate courses?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:56:59
@Jack - yes, and they often do.
kgator 2015-10-06 19:57:11
Kyle/10th/VA: How common is a music minor for math majors?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:57:12
Kyle, it's not too uncommon, but I couldn't give numbers. But it's quite common to combine math with another major or minor: bout 50-60% of math majors at MIT are double-majoring in some other field.
Tarin57 2015-10-06 19:57:53
Hakan / 11th / CA: Could one study bioengineering at MIT?
MattMcGann 2015-10-06 19:57:55
MIT is a great place for bioengineering. You can read more about our bioengineering department/major here: http://be.mit.edu/
stevengcj 2015-10-06 19:58:28
I'm seeing a lot of questions of the form "does MIT offer courses in X?" The easiest way to answer this is to search our course catalog: http://student.mit.edu/catalog/index.cgi
1Vector1 2015-10-06 19:58:32
Alexander/7thGrade/CA: I see one of your titles has the words Makers, Entrepreneurs, and Academic Superstars. Do you sort applicants into these three categories and accept a particular percentage in each of them? What if you fit in two categories? How do you show your ability as a maker or inventor in your application?
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:58:33
@Alexander - it's in my description, but no, we don't really 'sort' applicants into these categories, they're just the type of students I keep a special eye on (that's how we divvy up work in our process). You can, though, submit a Maker Portfolio on our website. See: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/introducing...-maker-portfolios

Alicia / 11th / NC (same Alicia, diff username, long story): Why are majors called by their respective number? Like course 16 etc
MITChris 2015-10-06 19:59:17
@Alicia - because MIT can't ever be normal
Math_Fan 2015-10-06 20:00:12
Aram/11th/NJ: Is it true that MIT has a really competitive environment?
Sahith 2015-10-06 20:00:12
Sahith/ 12th grade/ MA: I have heard people say that the culture can be very competitive. How true do you see this?
kcmm 2015-10-06 20:00:13
Emilie / 8th grade / NC: How high in math does MIT go? Like up to Calculus 2? Or even higher?
MITChris 2015-10-06 20:00:13
@Aram, Sahith - I don't think it's true at all. MIT is one of the most collaborative places I've ever been. Students at MIT work together because nobody is smart enough to get through MIT on their own. There is no class rank or latin honors at MIT. It's just about learning as much as you can to do the sorts of things you want to do in the world.
stevengcj 2015-10-06 20:00:14
Emilie, MIT offers over 140 math courses last I checked. Up to the PhD level, far beyond calculus.

John/12/IN: are you lenient about taking courses without formal prerequisites (but, say, self study)?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 20:12:33
John, prerequisites are generally only enforced by your advisor (who has to approve your choices of classes for a semester, although usually they end up taking whatever you want within reason). It is quite common, especially for Juniors and Seniors, to take courses that you don't have the formal prerequisites for, but for which you have self-studied or seen the material in some other context.

Swanand / 7 / NY : What is MIT's scholarship rate?
MITChris 2015-10-06 20:13:37
@Swanand - we are need blind and full need, which means that we a) don't take into account whether you are rich or poor when deciding whether to admit you, and b) will give you as much money as you need to afford MIT.
Jinx07 2015-10-06 20:14:36
Baby/11th/CA: How much do you take into account the effect of one's parents on their application? Shouldn't their achievements be considered in the context of their privileged situation?
MITChris 2015-10-06 20:14:37
@Baby - we try to take every applicant in their context. In the abstract, we are basically trying to evaluate what each applicant has done with their resources, whether they had a lot or very little.

MITChris 2015-10-06 20:15:20
@r0518 - applying is usually a good first step
stevengcj 2015-10-06 20:15:21
Lily - having grown up in Chicago, Boston seems mild to me. It rarely gets below 10°F. And there are a lot of students coming from tropical climates. But it will definitely seem cold and snowy here in winter. (Fortunately, almost all of the MIT buildings are connected, so if you live in a dorm that is close to the main buildings, then you don't actually have to go out in the cold much. As an undergraduate, my dorm was a 15 second dash from the nearest building and I often skipped a jacket in winter.)

Athletics -- we consider many special talents in the admissions process, including athletics. However, there is no special admissions door for athletes at MIT like there can be at many schools. All students are admitted in the same process, with the same rubrics. Athletics talent is a plus, like, say, music talent, or art talent. You should be in touch with the coach at MIT. stevengcj 2015-10-06 20:20:34
Will, homework assignments are usually available online. If you miss an exam or other work due to illness, you talk to a dean, and they verify your illness with MIT medical, and let your instructor know, and usually you can work something out. (Either a make-up exam or they just use your other exam scores.)

stevengcj 2015-10-06 20:22:32
The calculus I advanced-standing exam is comparable to the AP exam. Only a small fraction of students pass the calculus II (multi-variable) advanced-standing exam, but that's mainly because most students don't have more than a year of calculus in high school.

You can also often hear groups performing in the hall under the MIT dome as you walk to classes.

William/ 9th grade / OK: How long are the classes each? How long is a typical school day? How are your classes graded? How many classes are there per day?
stevengcj 2015-10-06 20:31:16
A typical student takes 4-5 classes, each of which meets 3-4 times per week for one hour. Most classes occur between 9am (usually later) and 4pm.
