There is still time to train for the November 6th and November 12th AMC 10A/12A and AMC 10B/12B, respectively! Enroll in our weekend seminars to be held on November 2nd and 3rd (listed below) and you will learn problem strategies, test taking techniques, and be able to take a full practice test! Note that the “B” seminars will have different material from the “A” seminars which were held in October.

Special AMC 10 Problem Seminar B

Special AMC 12 Problem Seminar B
For those who want to take a free practice test before the AMC 10/12 competitions, you can simulate a real competition experience by following this link. As you assess your performance on these exams, be sure to gather data!

Which problems did you get right?

Was the topic a strength (e.g. number theory, geometry, counting/probability, algebra)?

How did you prepare?

What was your confidence level?

Which problems did you get wrong?

Did you make an arithmetic error?

Did you misread the problem?

Did you have the foundational knowledge for the problem?

Which topics require more fluency through practice (e.g. number theory, geometry, counting/probability, algebra)?

Did you run out of time?

Once you have analyzed the results with the above questions, you will have a plan of attack for future contests! BEST OF LUCK to all competitors at this year’s AMC 10 and AMC 12!

Did you know that the day after both the AMC 10A/12A and AMC 10B/12B you can join a free math jam where our AoPS team will go over the most interesting problems? Find the schedule below under “Mark your calendars”.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming free math jams!

November 20th: Amherst College Info Session, 7:30 pm ET: Matt McGann, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Amherst College, and Nathan Pflueger, math professor at Amherst College, will host an info session exploring both Amherst College specifically and liberal arts colleges generally. Topics include opportunities in math, the admission process, and financial aid for both US and international students.

November 7th: 2024 AMC 10/12 A Discussion, Thursday, 7:30 pm ET:

AoPS instructors will discuss problems from the AMC 10/12 A, administered November 6. We will discuss some of the most interesting problems from each test!

November 13th: 2024 AMC 10/12 B Discussion, Wednesday, 7:30 pm ET:

AoPS instructors will discuss problems from the AMC 10/12 B, administered November 12. We will discuss some of the most interesting problems from each test!
Hey! Wanted to share a sneak peak of the new MathDash Book - hopefully it can help with your math training!

Included in this sneak peak are chapters on Primes and Divisors, Power of a Point, Ptolemy's Theorem, Linearity of Expectation, and Generating Functions, along with over 100 practice problems in total - in a unique timed contest format (different from any other book!).

Would love to hear feedback - this will help us add more content and improve it!

Logical guessing game!

Fourty slips of paper numbered $1$ to $40$ are placed in a hat. Alice and Bob each draw one number from the hat without replacement, keeping their numbers hidden from each other. Alice says, "I can't tell who has the larger number." Then Bob says, "I know who has the larger number." Alice says, "You do? Is your number prime?" Bob replies, "Yes." Alice says, "In that case, if I multiply your number by $100$ and add my number, the result is a perfect square. " What is the sum of the two numbers drawn from the hat?

Possibility of USAMO?
MathXplorer10   4
N an hour ago by MathXplorer10
Hi guys!

I got a 118.5 on the 12B test this year. I am wondering if it is possible to make USAMO (what do you think the cutoffs would be this year?)

For some background, I got 121.5/127.5 on the 10s last year, and got a 7 on AIME with no extra prep. Is it possible to go from a 7 to a 10 (or whatever I need to get on AIME)?

Thank you!

I got a 145.5 on 10b, could I slide with an 8 on AIME? Or would I have to get at least a 9-10? And also, if it was an harder AIME based on the 10b difficulty and general demography of how people did, what’s the lowest cutoffs could look like? I didn’t make AIME last year, so Idk much about cutoff predictions. Thanks

224.5 would barely slide if AIME = 2022. You'd need a 9 if AIME is normal, and probably a 10 if AIME is like AMCs (easy but bashy). 244.5 is safe for any AIME, 234.5 should be sufficient, 224.5 is risky. Aim for an 11 or 12, however. You will silly.

Anything 230+ will be safe, 220-230 will be 50/50, 210-220, probably because the AMCs were really easy. Or I could be wrong since they've lowered JMO cutoffs since 2022

bro the @OP is actually so sus :skull:

getting a 145.5 and being concerned about cutoffs is very abnormal. since when were real dhr scorers worried about aime (as an example, all of my dhr friends all got 12+ in last years aime)

keeping thread on topic, 235.5 is not sufficient for jmo 10b, you'll need 245.5+

I am interjecting here, but this is just plain WRONG. 235.5 is (essentially) guaranteed- see other's posts and POV's, but cutoffs for JMO should be late 210's since this test was easier than 2022, but much harder than 2023 when I mocked it. Word of the advice for all- look at what AoPs thinks is the 75th percentile- that's basically guaranteed since AoPs tends to overesstaimte cutoffs a LOT. even 50th percentile is likely making it, but a little bit more on the edge, and 25th percentile is there's a chance, but not very likely. There's simply no way you can argue this test was EASIER than 2023- it just wasn't, especially with the leaks from years before

Look at @xHytpotenuse's answer- he is probably one of the most reasonable preictors of cutoffs on AoPs IMHO( maybe a little aggressive but it gives you a good sense of what the cutoffs can be releastically)

235.5 index is basically guaranteed, since the only cutoff in recent years even close to that i think was a 232 iirc
also, being nervous is a natural instinct. it shouldn't be smth to be ashamed of

So according to that, If I got a 150 on the 10B, I only need to get an 8 on the aime?

just because you found the tests easy does not mean that jmo cutoffs will instantly be 240+. also dhr on recent amc10s and 12 on aime are def not equivalent

Honestly I agree with @xTimmyG, 245.5 should guarantee, JMO qual. This years 10b was quite easy. 235.5 (or 10 on AIME) is like 95% chance JMO qual. Getting an 8 an AIME is too risky given that the 10b test was so easy tho.
