Weekly Update: Math contests, MATHCOUNTS State competitions, and more
February 25, 2019
With February coming to a close and March beginning, it’s time to wrap up the February math contests and look ahead to March!
A special shout out goes to our AoPS Academy Vienna campus, where several students placed high in the Countdown round. A few AoPS students were also members of the Cooper Middle School Team this year, and finished 2nd–right behind BASIS! Congratulations to everyone who competed at the Chapter level this year.
Our Bellevue campus also had some students who earned bragging rights! At the local Math is Cool competition, AoPS students placed 1st in the 7th grade division and 2nd in the 6th grade division. Congratulations!
February wraps up with several contests taking place, including several from CEMC: 9th, 10th, and 11th graders have dedicated contests, the Pascal, Cayley, and Fermat Contests, respectively. They are administered on February 26 in the US, and on February 27 outside the US. Learn more about these contests (and other contests coming up) at the CEMC website.
Several notable math competition events will take place in March, particularly the MATHCOUNTS State competitions running all month. The state competitions determine who goes on to compete at the National Contest, which takes place in May.
The Stanford Math Tournament takes place on Saturday, March 2. It’s a tournament run by Stanford students, with three rounds – Team, Power, and Individual. You can learn more about the competition here.
This week, we have a special Math Jam!
AoPS Founder Richard Rusczyk will lead an Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) style Math Jam to discuss things like his passion for math education, what it’s like to run AoPS, projects we’re working on, and much more! Bring your questions and join us on Wednesday, February 27th!
We also have more spring classes starting this week, which include:
- Introduction to Algebra B (Monday, February 25)
- Introduction to Programming with Python (Monday, February 25)
- MATHCOUNTS/AMC 8 Basics (Monday, February 25)
