F=ma Problem Series

This course will prepare you to take the F=ma exam, the first test in a series of contests that determines the members of the US team for the International Physics Olympiad. You'll learn the classical mechanics you need for the F=ma exam as we solve and analyze problems taken from past exams. We'll also cover strategies for taking the test, and you'll get to take a practice F=ma test of brand-new problems.

AoPS Holidays

There are no classes May 25 ‐ 27, July 4, August 30 ‐ September 2, November 25 ‐ December 1, and December 21 2024 ‐ January 3, 2025.

Who Should Take?

This course is designed for high school students who have already learned the basics of Newtonian mechanics—specifically, Newton's laws, Newtonian gravity, and forces like friction and tension. If you've already passed the F=ma exam and are looking toward USAPhO, you'll want to take our PhysicsWOOT course instead.

Lessons

Lesson 1 1D Kinematics
Lesson 2 2D Kinematics and Vectors
Lesson 3 Newton's Laws
Lesson 4 Momentum and Energy
Lesson 5 Collisions
Lesson 6 Data Analysis
Lesson 7 Rotational Motion
Lesson 8 Orbital Mechanics
Lesson 9 Statics I - Balancing Forces and Torques
Lesson 10 Statics II - Fluids and Material Properties
Lesson 11 Oscillations
Lesson 12 Dimensional Analysis

I really liked this course because the approach to math was much more interesting than in school. The explanations were thorough. I liked that the course touched on a lot of different topics that are based more on logic and applying concepts we have already learned. Also, the online classroom idea is more convenient than attending an actual class. This was my first course, but I will want to do more now.
