Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar A Online Math Course

Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar A

This course is a special two-day, 5-hour seminar to prepare for the AMC 8 and other middle school level math contests. The AMC 8 is the premier fall math contest for middle school students, and also gives students early problem-solving experience that is valuable towards the high-school level AMC 10 and AMC 12 contests. In this course, students learn problem solving strategies and test-taking tactics over two lessons — on both Tuesday and Thursday, class will meet over a 3-hour period, with a half-hour break in the middle. The course also includes a practice AMC 8 test. This course covers entirely different problems than the Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar B, but is the same as the Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar offered prior to 2019.

Who Should Take?

This class is appropriate for students in grade 8 or below attempting to make the Honor Roll on the AMC 8.
  • If a student already consistently scores above 18 on the AMC 8, this class is probably not necessary.
  • If a student is unlikely to score more than 8 on the AMC 8, that student should consider our Prealgebra curriculum.
The material for this class is distinct from the Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar B, but is the same as the 2018 Special AMC 8 Seminar.

Lessons

Lesson 1 Word Problems and Number Theory
Lesson 2 Counting and Geometry

I loved my experience taking this course. What I loved most about it was that even if I knew a good part of the techniques we covered, I still learned many new ones and got a much better understanding of how to combine new and old concepts and apply them to problems that had previously seemed much more overwhelming. I look forward to taking other courses here in the future!
