Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar A Online Math Course

Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar A

This course is a special 5-hour weekend seminar to prepare for the AMC 8, which is the premier fall math contest for middle school students. The AMC 8 also gives students early problem-solving experience that is valuable towards the high-school level AMC 10 and AMC 12 contests, which are the first stage in determining the United States team for the International Math Olympiad. In this course, students learn problem solving strategies and test-taking tactics. The course also includes a practice AMC 8 test. This course covers entirely different problems than the Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar B, but is the same as the Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar offered prior to 2019.

Who Should Take?

This class is appropriate for students in grade 8 or below attempting to make the Honor Roll on the AMC 8.
  • If a student already consistently scores above 18 on the AMC 8, this class is probably not necessary.
  • If a student is unlikely to score more than 8 on the AMC 8, that student should consider our Prealgebra curriculum.
The material for this class is distinct from the Special AMC 8 Problem Seminar B, but is the same as the 2018 Special AMC 8 Seminar.

Lessons

Lesson 1 Word Problems and Number Theory
Lesson 2 Counting and Geometry

I liked the way my instructor presented and taught all the topics in this course. I feel that the challenge problems were truly challenging. They really kept me thinking about how many different ways I can come up with a solution. One main thing that I have improved during this course was learning how to write a detailed explanation under the writing challenge problem. The elaborate feedback that I received for the writing challenge problem was helpful and I was able to find an easier way to do the problem. I also learned how to use LaTeX. Overall I can't explain in words how much I truly enjoyed this course.
