Prealgebra 2 Self-Paced

Summary

Our Prealgebra 2 course builds off the concepts mastered in Prealgebra 1 by introducing percents and square roots, delving into a thorough exploration of geometric tools and strategies, and providing an introduction to topics in discrete mathematics and statistics, while continuing to facilitate discussion of general problem-solving strategies.

Prealgebra 2 is available as a live course that meets online weekly for 75-minute sessions, or as a self-paced course. Our self-paced courses allow students to advance at their own pace, with automated interactive instruction replacing live class meeting times. Both course styles offer instructor feedback on student work, as well as office hours and a class message board for student support throughout the course.

Prealgebra 2 Self-Paced: 50 Lessons

In our self-paced Prealgebra 2 course, students advance at their own rate through a series of automated interactive mathematical conversations. Students sharpen their understanding with multiple types of homework problems, supported by our Prealgebra textbook and videos. The self-paced classes offer live interaction through the class message board, where students can collaborate with peers and receive help from instructors. We offer unlimited access to the class for 9 months, and many students will complete Prealgebra 2 within 3–6 months.

Innovative Interactive Instruction

In our self-paced courses, students work their way through carefully scripted interactive lessons. These automated lessons engage students in mathematical conversations: each lesson reacts to student input, guiding them step-by-step through problems and tackling common misconceptions along the way. When students have questions, they can turn to the class message board where instructors provide additional assistance.

Active Learning

Learning is not a spectator sport. Students learn best by tackling hard problems themselves, not by watching others do the work. Therefore, we start lessons with questions, challenging the students to find the key insights on their own. This teaches students how to create new mathematical strategies as needed. When students get stuck, we provide hints and more direct instruction to help them proceed. After students have solved a problem, we follow up with important concepts and strategies before moving on to the next problem.

Students learn in many ways, so we teach through multiple avenues. In addition to the interactive lessons, our students can read the Prealgebra textbook, watch videos, solve many different types of homework problems, and participate in mathematical conversations with instructors and other students on the class message board.

Who Should Take This Class?

This course is designed for students who enjoy math and have completed our Prealgebra 1 course or its equivalent. Students can determine if their previous experience has prepared them for the course by taking the Are You Ready? Diagnostic Test. Students finishing our Beast Academy curriculum should take our Prealgebra 1 course prior to taking Prealgebra 2.

Prealgebra prepares students for the rigors of algebra and also teaches students problem-solving techniques to prepare them for prestigious middle school math contests such as MATHCOUNTS, MOEMS, and the AMC 8. The text is written to challenge students at a much deeper level than a traditional middle school prealgebra course.

Self-paced is good for us. So I am really loving that AoPS is putting some energy into developing this option. We really like the self-paced lessons, the chatbot has a sense of humour. :)
