Math Crazy Kids Need Some Summer Fun?

“Camp was amazing!”

“I really enjoyed all the activities and the guest speakers. I didn’t realize how many jobs I could actually use math in.”

Those are comments from students have attended Math Contest Camp in the past. Over the course of ten years, 500 campers in 5th-12th grade have attended for one week of fun with math and other math-loving kids and counselors.

If you have students who love math and challenges, pass this information on to them and their parents. This summer (2016), there will be four separate one week camps: June 19-24 for students entering 7th-12th grades, June 26-July 1 for students entering 6th-8th grades, July 10-15 for students entering 5th-7th grades and July 17-22 for students entering 8th-12th grade. All weeks of camp are held on the campus of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO.

New in 2016 is the option of a Computer Science Track July 12-22 only for students entering 9th-12th grades. If sufficient numbers sign up for the Computer Science Track it will become a separate camp. This track will give campers experience learning how to use computer science to write code on a variety of platforms like Scratch, Code.org, Earsketch (digital music), and/or IPRE robotics, and students will get to learn about 3D printing. Dr. Tim DeClue and Mrs. Meilani Conley will be doing the instructional component of this track.

Along with various math activities, the campers can participate in other activities. Such activities as rock climbing, pool time, and indoor and outdoor games.

The camp is directed by Dr. Kevin Hopkins, the chairman of the math department at SBU, but SBU is not a sponsor of the camp.

Math Contest Camp costs $400 a week. That covers room and board(with 2-3 students per room), a t-shirt and bag, group photo, and activities at the Wellness Center on campus.
