k i Suggestion Form
jwelsh   0
May 6, 2021
Hello!

Given the number of suggestions we’ve been receiving, we’re transitioning to a suggestion form. If you have a suggestion for the AoPS website, please submit the Google Form:
Suggestion Form

To keep all new suggestions together, any new suggestion threads posted will be deleted.

Please remember that if you find a bug outside of FTW! (after refreshing to make sure it’s not a glitch), make sure you’re following the How to write a bug report instructions and using the proper format to report the bug.

Please check the FTW! thread for bugs and post any new ones in the For the Win! and Other Games Support Forum.

k i Read me first / How to write a bug report
slester   3
N May 4, 2019 by LauraZed
Greetings, AoPS users!

If you're reading this post, that means you've come across some kind of bug, error, or misbehavior, which nobody likes! To help us developers solve the problem as quickly as possible, we need enough information to understand what happened. Following these guidelines will help us squash those bugs more effectively.

Before submitting a bug report, please confirm the issue exists in other browsers or other computers if you have access to them.

For a list of many common questions and issues, please see our user created FAQ, Community FAQ, or For the Win! FAQ.

What is a bug?
A bug is a misbehavior that is reproducible. If a refresh makes it go away 100% of the time, then it isn't a bug, but rather a glitch. That's when your browser has some strange file cached, or for some reason doesn't render the page like it should. Please don't report glitches, since we generally cannot fix them. A glitch that happens more than a few times, though, could be an intermittent bug.

If something is wrong in the wiki, you can change it! The AoPS Wiki is user-editable, and it may be defaced from time to time. You can revert these changes yourself, but if you notice a particular user defacing the wiki, please let an admin know.

The subject
The subject line should explain as clearly as possible what went wrong.

Bad: Forum doesn't work
Good: Switching between threads quickly shows blank page.

The report
Use this format to report bugs. Be as specific as possible. If you don't know the answer exactly, give us as much information as you know. Attaching a screenshot is helpful if you can take one.

Summary of the problem:
Page URL:
Steps to reproduce:
1.
2.
3.
...
Expected behavior:
Frequency:
Operating system(s):
Browser(s), including version:
Additional information:

If your computer or tablet is school issued, please indicate this under Additional information.

Example
Summary of the problem: When I click back and forth between two threads in the site support section, the content of the threads no longer show up. (See attached screenshot.)
Page URL: http://artofproblemsolving.com/community/c10_site_support
Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to the Site Support forum.
2. Click on any thread.
3. Click quickly on a different thread.
Expected behavior: To see the second thread.
Frequency: Every time
Operating system: Mac OS X
Browser: Chrome and Firefox
Additional information: Only happens in the Site Support forum. My tablet is school issued, but I have the problem at both school and home.

How to take a screenshot
Mac OS X: If you type ⌘+Shift+4, you'll get a "crosshairs" that lets you take a custom screenshot size. Just click and drag to select the area you want to take a picture of. If you type ⌘+Shift+4+space, you can take a screenshot of a specific window. All screenshots will show up on your desktop.

Windows: Hit the Windows logo key+PrtScn, and a screenshot of your entire screen. Alternatively, you can hit Alt+PrtScn to take a screenshot of the currently selected window. All screenshots are saved to the Pictures → Screenshots folder.

Advanced
If you're a bit more comfortable with how browsers work, you can also show us what happens in the JavaScript console.

In Chrome, type CTRL+Shift+J (Windows, Linux) or ⌘+Option+J (Mac).
In Firefox, type CTRL+Shift+K (Windows, Linux) or ⌘+Option+K (Mac).
In Internet Explorer, it's the F12 key.
In Safari, first enable the Develop menu: Preferences → Advanced, click "Show Develop menu in menu bar." Then either go to Develop → Show Error console or type Option+⌘+C.

It'll look something like this:

How to get good at comp math
fossasor   18
N 9 minutes ago by Inaaya
I'm a rising ninth grader who wasn't in the school math league this year, and basically put aside comp math for a year. Unfortunately, that means that now that I'm in high school and having the epiphany about how important comp math actually is, and how much it would help my chances of getting involved in other math-related programs. In addition, I do enjoy math in general, and suspect that things like the AMCs are probably going to be some of the best practice I can get. What this all means is that I'm trying to go from mediocre to orz, 2 years after I probably should have started if I wanted to be any good.

So my question is: how do I get good at comp math?

This year, my scores on AMC 10 (and these are the highest I've ever gotten) were a 73.5 and an 82.5 (AMC 8 was 21/25, but that doesn't matter much). This is not good enough to qualify for AIME, and I probably need to raise my performance on each by at least 10 points. I've been decently good in the past at Number Theory, but I need to work on Geo and Combinatorics, and I'm trying to find the best resources to do that. My biggest flaw is probably not knowing many algorithms like Stars and Bars, and the path is clear here (learn them) but I'm still not sure which ones I need to know.

I'm aware that some of this advice is going to be something like "Practice 5 hours a day and start hardgrinding" or something along those lines. Unfortunately, I have other extracurriculars I need to balance, and for me, time is a limiting resource. My parents are somewhat frowning upon me doing a lot of comp math, which limits my time as well. I have neither the time nor motivation to do more than an hour a day, and in practice, I don't think I can be doing that consistently. As such, I would need to make that time count.

I know this is a very general question, and that aops is chock-full of detailed advice for math competitions. However, I'd appreciate it if anyone here could help me out, or show me the best resources I should use to get started. What mocks are any good, or what textbooks should I use? Where do I get the best practice with the shortest time? Is there some place I can find a list of useful formulas that have appeared in math comps before?

All advice is welcome!

N Dec 30, 2023 by bpan2021
How can I write this in asymptote code? I need to include this in my LaTeX document, though I don't know how to convert it to LaTeX code.
Here is the problem:
Given is a parallelogram ABCD with diagonal intersection M such that the circumcircle of the triangle ABM intersects the segment AD at a point E which is different from A and the circumcircle of the triangle EMD intersects the segment BE at a point F different from E.

k Asymptote Diagrams
Riptide1901   12
N Sep 30, 2023 by LauraZed
For some reason when I use asymptote to make a diagram (specifically in message threads), it instead renders something completely different then what its supposed to be (and I didn't write it wrong because I checked it on TeXeR). For example I tried making the diagram,
IMAGE
[code]import three;

draw(unitcone,palegrey);

draw(circle((0,0,.3),.7));
draw((.7,0,.3)--(1,0,0));[/code]
This is supposed to be a cone and a lasso but instead it renders a strait line and a curvy line which is something I made a while ago (and actually it renders that same image for every diagram I tried to make). You can verify that on TeXeR.

Also for some reason when I take out the "import" package it fixes things but I can't do it in this case without it messing up the code.

I also don't know if it's only messed up on my end, or its messed up on other people's ends also. Either way its a big inconvenience.

So Is there a reason for this? Is this a glitch or a bug or am I just doing something wrong?

k Asymptote not working again
club52   23
N Aug 3, 2023 by jlacosta
Summary of the problem: Trying dot((0,0)) on asymptote breaks it
Page URL: Any old AoPS page
Steps to reproduce:
1. Open up an asymptote window on AoPS
2. Type dot((0,0));
Expected behavior: It should show you a dot centered at the origin, instead it shows you a blue speck.
Frequency: I just noticed it today.
Operating system: Windows 11
Browser: Latest version of google chrome
Additional information: This is not the first time that Asymptote breaks on AoPS... Additionally, in last nights math jam, tame the groofle, the asymptote was having trouble rendering, although I'm not sure if this is related.

k Asymptote code not rendering even after waiting
squareroot12621   3
N Jul 7, 2023 by LoreleiA
Summary of the problem: The Asymptote code at https://artofproblemsolving.com/texer/igdncqbp does not load and instead shows the following error message: "Error making remote request. Timeout error. Sorry, rendering operation timed out. Please try again in a few minutes."
Page URL: https://artofproblemsolving.com/texer/igdncqbp
Steps to reproduce:
$\quad$1. Click the link above.
$\quad$2. Click "Render as Image". Clicking "Render with bbCode" will show "Unrecognized services response." after $30$ seconds instead.
$\quad$3. Wait for $30$ seconds.
$\quad$4. Observe that the aforementioned error message appears.
Expected behavior: The Asymptote code renders correctly.
Frequency: $100\%,$ throughout two days.
Operating system(s): Windows 11, version 22H2, build 22621.1848.
Browser(s), including version: Microsoft Edge, 114.0.1823.67, 64-bit.
Additional information: Even though the end of the error message seems to suggest that waiting for a few minutes and then rendering will work, this has not worked on multiple occasions.

this data is skewed because generally bad states wouldn't post their scores.

Here, Ohio and PA are both shown to be slightly below average, but they both placed 14th and 18th out of 50 states and 6 territories.

Cutoffs are different from top scorers though. I did MATHCOUNTS in two states, each of which typically ranked between 20th and 30th, and had cutoffs one or two points lower than Pennsylvanias. The difference between those states and Pennsylvania is the scores were much closer together.
