I participated/am participating in some competitions:
School Chess Tourney
Water Bottle Horse
Rap Battle
School Chess Tourney
Won the first round pretty easily. But I lost the second since I didn't know how to defend against a traxler. Pretty satisfied with my performance, though I hope to practice more to make the semifinals someday. @Mac @Eric please train me.
I am currently lacking in theory and intuition; given enough time to look at the board, I can usually make enough good moves, but with faster games and common traps/tricks I have difficulty. I hope to do some reading/practice to improve this deficiency.

Water Bottle Horse
I recently began to go full-2016 mode with water bottle flipping, and learned quite a few trick shots
Some tricks I learned for consistent water bottle flipping is that the water level matters - around 20-50% is optimal, but more importantly, you need to make sure your power level when flipping is either maximal (since using full power is more consistent power output than going half-way) or minimal (for the same reasons). Also, height matters: faster but lower is better than slower and higher.
I played horse but for water bottle trick shots with a classmate - clinched a victory by 1 point - mostly due to being less aggressive with the trick shots I tried (not going for shots I knew were impossible). Scored quite a few cool looking ones that I knew were easy due to the positions being isomorphic to standard shots.
My proudest ones include flipping it onto a whiteboard marker ledge, a fire extinguisher, and the top of a closet.

Rap Battle
I'm going against a classmate in a rap battle this Friday. The topic will be decided during the competition by a neutral bystander. Winner gets bragging rights.
Can't Believe It's Over

Finally finished
Too many emotions - sadness, relief, nostalgia - but you're gone, and gone forever, and I can never see your face again...
You left this world 5 days too soon, was expecting it on Thursday, not Saturday right as I woke up, getting the message that you're gone.
It's been a wild ride. Going on almost too long, not long enough, but an invariant in my life.
I'll miss you.
Goodbye <3

September Skies
by Eyed, Sep 30, 2022, 6:21 PM
I’m hesitant to post anything on this blog.
I don’t wanna miss September. I kept monthly posts as a tradition for so long, and I’m a firm believer in honoring tradition; do I really want to lose such work and effort in the span of a few months that changed me? It seems big now - and I feel it is - but I wanna keep at least some semblance of my previous self alive.
Mop happened. Then after-mop meetups happened. Finished PRIMES interim report. Saw pretty fireworks.
Went to California for a month. Camps were fun. Saw and met cool people, different people, very strange perspectives with frameworks and life goals that I don’t agree with completely. Alas. Still interesting to talk to. Effective Altruism is a rational philosophy, I need more time to think about it. So many pulls. California’s culture is fundamentally different. More young, more risks, more dropping of tradition. I don’t know if it’s right for me. Difference in instructors and staff is pretty clear - they’re all so much younger, and growing with us. So much talks about “positive EV” in founding startups and trading crypto. Will have to do more research to see if this is true; is EV higher than stabler path? There is a good possibility - I’ll leave options open.
Chicago and home vibe are so much different from California - less of the do things you want to and an agentic framework - taking control of your life or something. Meh. I can lose agency for a while - somedays I feel if I keep going in the direction of my own pursuits, I’ll get lost. Mentors from older and more experienced folks who give a set goal/way to go is easier. And probably, for these next few months, gives a higher possibility of success than trying a bunch of my own things - I’m still young, and have time to be agnetic after responsibilities.
College apps started. Being busy with those - oly is so fun now.
I went to New York, saw lots of old friends, many I haven’t talked to in a while. New York isn’t as good of a city as Chicago - too much vibrant lights and noise and busyness. It’s a true big city - I feel like I’m in a maze of steel and glass rather than having the buildings and I both be underneath the sky; the city is the environment, rather than existing in one.
People are beautiful though. I can see and touch them. Being a part of my reality now, my perception of the world. They truly exist, and I can confirm it. Got to talk to many peers in a serious tone. Facets of personality revealed that I just didn’t know before. Super glad.
Met up with AIME12345 yesterday. Nice talk, nice walk. Thanks for helping with linalg.
Feeling less alone now. Nay, I’m not alone now. Too many people all around me. Trying to make time for conversations filled with content and ideas. Slightly succeeding. Finally feeling satisfied.

Writing Conventions
by Eyed, Aug 3, 2022, 10:28 PM
Transcribed from a dm with Max Lu
Also I've come to realize that I've transformed into someone who doesn't care about grammar conventions, and instead write to try to convey like how I would speak - in the use of little breaths, run ons, etc to indicate passion/excitement, commas willy-nilly for the purpose of a when I feel a breath should be necessary even if not grammatically correct - though I would not speak how I write like, as no one should, I threw grammar out the window to try to get the tone and purpose across in my writing, but my (quite) excessive use of extra words + phrases makes it impossible to actually be translated to spoken word, but instead how I think in my mind, and what I want to reason clearly from the jumble of thoughts; I try to write how I think - which, for me, is "imaginary" spoken words.
And that's how I end up with 150 word sentences.
If this was an English class I would say that "The ridding of traditional grammar conventions, but instead finding the ability to write the way one truly wanted to, is representative of the breaking of societal structures that prevent us from achieving liberty: the main character shifts from being content with their current state to actively looking to better themselves by taking freedom into their own hands. Without having to care about traditional values, the main character suddenly can be more open with their thoughts and beliefs, just as the way they write becomes a more accurate depiction of what they want to convey."
But alas, this is not an English class.
So the actual meaning behind this shift goes something like "Jeffrey is a troll and thinks bad grammar conventions will be funny/easier to write and trolly to read."
Like, imagine you're in the middle of my sentence, eyes scanning to find the end, a sea of commas and dashes or just words, words, words, continuing to read but never stopping, no way to pause and actually think because you just keep on reading and reading, the rush and excitement conveyed that forces you to never stop: you have to keep going, the meaning distorted in some ways, contradicting, yet making sense from a high level structure, but in the midst of the sentence just having to follow each individual idea, jumping ship to ship, until after ages you reach the end, satisfied, and seeing the idea conveyed, a rush of thoughts that came out, unedited, barely flowing together, the adjectives and epithets and prepositions almost making sense, but the tone, and the passion, and all the emotions you've received from reading it - that is what I want you to feel.

Summer Day 19
by Eyed, Jul 9, 2022, 8:44 PM
I woke up pretty late, at 6:15 am. The other people in the room with me all woke up earlier, and according to J Wan were all laughing at me for a bit. I decided to stay on the floor for another few minutes before getting up. I got a total of 3 hours of sleep, which was great! Apparently H Mui and B Wang came to check in on us before, but I did not notice.
We decided to move to the couches, which were infinitely much more comfortable than the floor. We then played a few rounds of the mind, which went as well as you would expect for 6 people on 3 hours of sleep. After a few rounds of this degeneracy, at which point we were almost all asleep, I decided to go put my blankets and pillow away. J Wan decided to do the same, so we ran down to the 2nd floor and passed B Wang, who apparently woke up (Sorry Brandon). It turned out J Wan had my keycard, so she allowed me into my room, where I saw M Lu awake for once!
I then put my stuff into my room, at which point I realized I did not own my keycard. I also realized that I held valuables inside my room, and a certain person wanted these valuables. Thus, for the next 30 minutes, I fought a desperate struggle to prevent J Wan into my room, and I was successful in doing this. However, S Liu decided to sneak into my room and grab all of my valuables. She then left it into a place I could not access, so I lost everything of value. During this time, while trying to prevent people from stealing my stuff, E Wang, D Dong, J Wan, and M Lu attempted to steal my mattress. Thus, I had to enter negotiations with K Sue and J Wan to get my things back. We decided to steal B Wang’s mattress, but he unfortunately would not let us.
It was getting quite late in the morning, so I got people to go to the kennywood trip. J Lin, A Bu, M Xu, K Wu, M Lu, D Liu and I all arrived early. L Robitaille told me to be his alarm clock, so I went to wake him up. E Shen as usual was AWOL. A Zhao was taking a shower, so I called him repeatedly (his roommate picked up more than once). And finally, our tour guide, S Rudenko, decided not to show up. After some emergency calls, both to students and staff, we finally got everyone together and found a staff member (J Godinez). We got our bus tickets, went to the stop, and watched the bus leave us because it was too full. Our group along with another one (including A Rama, J Lee, and E Slettnes) waited for the next bus to arrive, so we played some frisbee in the cut. During this time, a wild J Chen from Illinois was spotted! We talked for a bit; it turned out K Wu was his roommate at Idea math a while ago, and K Wu was a very bad roommate :p J Chen also decided to replace S Rudenko as the USA team’s deputy leader. He then had to leave, and we waited for a little bit more for our bus.
When we got to kennywood, it was a bit late, but still only 11:30am. Our group of 10 split into three: M Lu and E Shen went together, L Robitaille and D Liu went exploring, while A Zhao, M Xu, J Lin, A Bu, K Wu, and I went on all of the big, fast, and scary rides. Some highlights included:
We got lunch at a really overpriced, sketchy, and bad food court. A Zhao and I were being dumb and got pasta: it was very oily and crunchy (pretty sure they went bad). I stole some of A Bu’s fries. We got italian ice as well, and A Bu and I went to a thomas the tank engine gift shop. We then went back on the bus together, where I was on the verge of following asleep next to A Zhao (but his shoulder did not let me sleep there)
When we got back, I decided to go to Sushi Fuku with E Shen, K Vedula, and some others. On the way back, M Lu let us know that ELMO coordination things were happening in Tepper. E Shen and I, looking for points for our team members, rushed over there. During this time, we put off coordination an unfinished coordinate bash for later. I also read through several pages of ELMO p6s, which were mostly unusable scratch work :p. Unfortunately, K Wu was tired of us holding him hostage, so he was not terribly interested in working with us. Thus, we held him hostage again and bumped up a 5 to a 6 (thanks K Wu <3). I kept looking for points, even asking some really dumb questions to E Xiong and E Slettnes (“can you get points if the previous precedent was 0”). L Robitaille, who was observing me attempt to get more points, suddenly found motivation to argue for partials for his team. This culminated in him yelling “points, points, points!” really loudly and excitedly when he finally discovered some possible partials for a problem 4. During this time, M Lu and E Shen were being extremely helpful team leaders by:
ELMO coordination morphed into storytime with Po. He talked about making money and his thoughts on the differences between small/medium/large sums of money. He also told us a bit about his past life playing the market (and how he thought that playing stupidly made him money). After storytime, I headed back to Stever, where M Xu, D Dong, K Wu, and others heard about our sleepover on the 5th floor yesterday. Thus, we, along with several other (~a dozen) people headed up to the 5th floor to play card games and sleep there. I worked on IOI\cap IMO problems because they were fun. Around 12am, which was 1 hour after curfew, we decided to pull up blankets and pillows to the 5th floor. J Wan went downstairs to “sleep in her room”. J Lefkowitz, Lu Tang, K Wu, D Dong, M Xu, A Zhao, E Liu, T Zhang, and I stayed up there, and I proceeded to immediately go to sleep. B Wang went to check on us but he did not care. Unfortunately, H Mui also came, and he did care about us sleeping on the 5th floor. He made all of us go back to our rooms, but I later learned that he was actually saving us because an RA was later coming up.
M Xu decided to sneak into my room after getting kicked out. He wanted to sleepover, however M Lu did not want it. Because RA’s were still wandering outside, M Xu had to stay in our room for the next hour. He attempted to run back to his room once, but an RA was outside and he had to run back inside our room. Luckily, at an opportune moment, he was able to go back to his room, and M Lu and I were finally able to sleep at 2:30.

Summer Day 18
by Eyed, Jun 29, 2022, 10:17 PM
I woke up at 8:40, despite setting my alarm at 7:28; at usual, M Lu was still asleep.
I went downstairs and decided to not do math with other people due to it being TSTST day 3. Instead, I began to play some card games and ping pong, but E Slettnes invited me to a secret hitler game. This was my first time playing. According to others, J Lefkovitz trolls a lot, so I decided to troll even harder. Somehow this almost worked; I won 2 out of the 3 the games I played (I was fascist for the first two). As a group, we decided to go to get brunch along with some other people at stever. A few (J Lee, some others) decided to go to Chipotle instead. I thought this was a bad idea, but it turned out resnik was a worse idea. I ended up eating nothing at resnik because of how bad the food looked/tasted, so I went into TSTST with an empty stomach.
As usual, no TSTST discussion will be put onto this blog. After TSTST, a giant group (~30 students) decided to walk to squirrel hill to get food. I went. This big group split into three groups: the fast walkers, the slow walkers, and the medium walkers. I was in the fast walker group with F Wang and B Wang. We got to the correct place 5 minutes faster than the next two groups. During this time, J Wan and I bet against B Wang on TSTST’s problem author. This is how we lost 14 bucks to Brandon :p
I went to some burger place that was just rebranded McDonalds with A Wang, S Liu, D Liu, D Xu, A Zhao, L Cai, B Wang, and F Wang. During this time, D Xu was telling us about his interesting plans (I’m not sure if they’re very good though). After dinner, some people wanted to get Boba, so we waited for them for a little bit. We walked back, again split into the same 3 groups, during which I tried to analyze possible TSTST problem authors.
By the time we got back, it was already too late to go to test review. I went to Tepper because there was cake and piano there, then went back to Stever. Around this time I realized that the fifth floor of Stever would be a perfect spot to break curfew. I told J Wan, A Ge, E Liu, K Wu, K Sue, and An Wang about it. We decided to go up there to play cards. After a while, some more people showed up (D Dong, V Hu, S Liu, L Robitaille). We kept playing cards, during which certain people were clearly losing their sanity (HmMmMm), so I gave such certain people a complex bash. L Robitaille decided to invite some people from the 3rd floor, including K Cong, A Zhao, R Goel, L Huang and A Gu. This made the entire situation quite interesting, but they left after a little bit.
After a bunch of complex numbers, we decided it would be a good idea to sleep up on the fifth floor. It was already 1am (1 hour past curfew) and no one checked on us. K Wu and An Wang didn’t actually think we would sleep up there, so they left. We then played a game of semantle, at which point it was already around 2:30. J Wan, V Hu, S Liu, and I decided to get pillows and blankets to sleep on. E Liu decided he would be comfortable just sleeping in a sweater, while V Hu, A Ge, and S Liu shared a few couches/blankets together. Unfortunately, there were not enough couches, so J Wan and I slept on the floor together. At around 3am, we went to sleep, at which point we were interrupted by E Shen who came to check us out. He then left, and we fell asleep.
