Generating functions

by 1234567890, Jun 17, 2006, 3:21 PM

I might sound a bit cynical here, but it is crunch time (in terms of the AMC/AIME) and I am not sure I should study topics that are likely not to appear on the AIME. So should I study generating functions? Have there been any AIME problems that required the use of these or made it extremely easy? I'm confused....

Generating functions are pretty cool but unfortunately I cannot honestly say I remember ever using them on an AIME problem. I definitely haven't used them on AMC. I recommend learning them at some point but you can put them 2nd priority behind topics that show up a lot on the AIME. Complex numbers also don't show up very often on the AIME. Though, when they do, they are usually not too hard as long as you know complex numbers (at least that's how I find things). Definitely practice geometry a lot. There is a lot of geometry on the AIME.

Thanks. I guess I'll skip them.

I need to work on counting the most, though.... :(

Yes you definitely need a lot of work on counting. Therefore, take my mock AIME at http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?p=387251#p387251

You don't necessarily have to do it under timed conditions, although that will probably help you. There are lots of counting/combinatorics problems on there.

I have no idea whether you actually need to improve your counting or not, but who cares. :P

Hey I agree with Joe that geometry is an very important subject on AMC/AIME. Hence take my mock AIME and Alex's Mock AIME, both mock AIME include many geometry problems(preferably do mine first because it's due tomorrow!!).

  • Hmm... I'm sleepy now. 3 hours of sleep total the last three days. Oh, well. I had fun doing math when staying awake (no fun doing HW. though)
