PuMAC - very late
by b-flat, Dec 2, 2007, 7:24 PM
It has been a while since PuMAC 2007, but I never posted anything earlier about it. Also, I have not posted in my blog in quite a while, so I decided to post.
The contest was quite fun; NC played mafia quite a lot on the way back.
As for the actual contest, I am still not sure how my BS managed to be worth 3 points on #1, but oh well, it was fun and challenging.

zomg ARML...

Dude
We did not win ARML
what is up with that i smell h4x
but dude i got 7 and we had 3 other 7s including Arnav, and we had 6 6s including b-flat. However, we managed to fail team+relay (28, 16
) and get only 32 on power. Oh well 4th is better than nothing.
Also, the prizes were kinda bad... an ARML t-shirt for 7s!!? last year they got sweatshirts that at least said HIGH SCORER so... yeah not fair
Hmm yes Mao at ARML was fun too.. we didn't enforce talking very much so I kept saying "yarrrrrr" which I learned from Arnav on Friday
I do believe the reason we didn't win was because jb05 decided NOT to give us PINK SHIRTS. I mean Exeter won and they had PINK SHIRTS. dude. come on jb05.

ARML practice
by not_trig, May 21, 2007, 2:37 PM
We had ARML practice on Saturday. Lots of relays, plus some individual stuff. The "mission impossible" stuff was... rather ... hard? (hence the name.)
I am happy to say that I got 8 on individual (out of 10 ...
). Arnav got them all I think, and I think Misha+Jeremy got 9. Schleiper got 9 (EH?). Vitek got 8. Berman and b-flat here got 7
but oh well, overall most of us did rather well.
Schleiper may be a good candidate for A Team but he was rather... obnoxious
as was Nick Tobey. (OMG TO FACTOR
YOU DO
i mean... eh?)

More about NAL
by b-flat, May 18, 2007, 10:42 PM
Everyone seemed really impressed at school. I just nodded & said thank you most of the time
I'm guessing that NAL will have much more popularity next year, though it'll be hard to win again.
Our Team:
Strengths: Math (a fair number of people, though not all), geography, easy to memorize type stuff, language
Weaknesses: Current Events (luckily, they only asked 1 in the championship, and it was from several months ago, as opposed to 2 weeks ago), economics, energy/work (joules, volts, etc), some areas of science.
I also have to congratulate our team; we practice for 1 hour a week (not every week, just when we have matches and a few others) & eat snacks for 45 minutes of the practice, compared to the other team's 4 hours a week a season & 3 hours a week off-season practicing!!!
linkie to NAL page, for those who don't know
Has anyone else even heard of NAL (most of the good schools I can think of don't participate)?

NAL National Champs!
by b-flat, May 17, 2007, 11:24 PM
Today, my school won the national championship in NAL against a team from Utah; where it was invented.
I'm pretty sure that this is the first time someone other than the team from Utah won it (matches against other states are played via teleconference).
NAL Breakdown:
4 quarters; 5 players each quarter; 5 backup; 10-minute time limit
1st Quarter:
Questions are asked in rounds of 3; 2 points for getting it correct and 1 for "stealing" by taking possession when the opposing team misses
15 seconds to answer
2nd Quarter (I'm captain
):
Team round (only uses 5 players; back-ups sit out); 3 points/question with 60 seconds; only captain may buzz in or speak
3rd Quarter:
5 minutes to present on a topic (given 1/2 hour to prepare)
4th Quarter:
1-on-1; 2 points for correct, -1 for a miss; first to buzz in gets to answer; if both people pass/miss, then anyone may buzz in
Scores:
1st Quarter: 17-17
I didn't think we would tie because they had the huge advantage of going first (didn't get to play)
2nd Quarter: 32-32
It should have been 26-38, but I screwed up really badly as captain & missed 2 easy questions (one I just totally forgot to say "negative")
3rd Quarter: 55-54
They graded their team too highly; they should have been given the same grade
4th Quarter: 72-72
The questions were really easy. I was backup (coaches want to play everyone) & didn't get in again due to low time.
Over Time (3 extra minutes of 4th quarter): 82-71:
w00t, I got to play; I got a really easy math one right & wasted all of the time on one about the Columbia River which I should have guessed, but didn't bother. We won because most of the questions were math (like 6 in a row!).
Summary: We won because no one messed up too badly and played fairly well.
Now, everyone thinks that we are the best school in the nation
