Three women check into a motel room that advertises a rate of 27 per night. They each give 10 to the porter, and ask her to bring back three dollar bills. The porter returns to the desk, where she learns that the room is actually only 25 per night. She gives 25 to the motel desk clerk, returns to the room, and gives the guests back each one dollar, deciding not to tell them about the actual rate. Thus the porter has pocketed 2, while each guest has spent 10 - 1 =9, a total of 2+3 x 9=29. What happened to the other dollar?
The catch is that each guest didn't spend 9. When the porter gives 25 to the clerk, each guest cashes in 25/3. As the porter heads back with 5 in her hands, we know each guest has 5/3 of their money in her hands, 2/3 of which the porter keeps for herself, and the remaining 3/3=1 of which is given back to each guest, so each guest in reality has spent 25/3+1=28/3, for a total of 28+2=30.
Remark
Yes yes this was really easy, but a lighthearted problem, I guess? I felt depressed today so I didn't do much math, and instead procrastinated/balled the whole day.
Tidbit
Yay my diet's working.
My weight is now a solid 2 KG lower than start of summer. But I mean, whose weight wouldn't go down with them running 6 miles on the treadmill and balling an hour every day? But anyways, I was craving for meat so badly today and all I could do is stuff my stomach full of boiled vegetables and potatoes as I've been doing for almost 3 weeks now... You guys have no idea how much I would kill for a bowl of pho with an ice cold boba right now.
