SUMaC results and update

by junbeom01pd2020, Apr 27, 2019, 4:02 AM

Accepted to program 2. I'm so excited to learn algebraic topology, especially because I had signed up for a mini on the subject at HCSSiM two years ago and did not get my first choice :P I'm also really grateful to go this year, as I know there are many others who are much better than me that didn't get in.

Anyways, APs are coming up and these past few weeks have been terrible for me in terms of workload. I guess this is the final push for junior year, because after APs I'm virtually free with only one class to care about (general chemistry). I was going to fly to Korea to take the KMO round 1 on May 11th, but I canceled it due to being wayyyyy too behind for APs (especially because the contest is right in between the two weeks of AP testing).

That's it for this blog update, gotta go finish my lang essay !11!1!!!!!! :bomb:

This seems very unlikely because the B cutoffs always seem to be at least in the 230s lmao but just for fun

EDIT: I was 21 points off :coolspeak: ...236 seems way too high still

AIMEEEEEEEEEE in less than a week

by junbeom01pd2020, Mar 17, 2019, 4:17 PM

omlomloml haven't posted anything in so long but...

AIME II IS IN LESS THAN A WEEK

i feEeL vErY pRePArED

Mocked 2014 AIME ii today and did 1-10 because I was trying to do 11 the whole time but couldn't get the last step. I need to make sure something like this does not happen on test day because it isn't worth it to invest all my time into one question. To avoid this, I'm going to set a maximum 20 minute rule where I move on no matter what if I've been struggling for over 20 minutes.

Some other "strategies" I'm gonna use:

Right at the 2 hour mark, I will check all my answers instead of checking towards the end. This will help me be more thorough while checking (instead of racing through my scratch paper with 5 minutes left).

I'm going to make sure to at least try every single question as there are usually one or two that are misplaced.

IF I SEE ANY ALGEBRA OR NT, I SKIP

To be honest, I don't really feel nervous. I'm just going to try to have fun doing the problems and try to solve everything I can so that I have no regrets afterwards (may be last AIME because I'm a junior and I may be traveling during this time next year).

Anyways, good luck to everyone taking it!

Summer is almost over :(

by junbeom01pd2020, Aug 11, 2018, 6:19 PM

School starts in two days :bomb: and I just got back from ross
This summer I went to AMSP UTD, stayed in Korea for two weeks, and then went to Ross Asia. I learned a lot from both camps and I will post detailed reviews on them in a few days when I have more time.

I did some old AIME 14/15s today and tbh I don't know if I improved that much (or at all, even) over the summer. My initial plan was to git gud from AMSP+free time in korea but it seems like I didn't put in as much work as required RIP

Anyways, that's it for now but I'll be back soon with summer camp reviews

Olympiad or Computational

by junbeom01pd2020, May 25, 2018, 3:34 PM

I'm in a dilemma of whether I should be focusing more on computational problems (HMMT, PUMAC, SMT, late AIME, etc.) or olympiad problems. I posted some time ago that I will be focusing on olympiads to trivialize AIME problems but I'm not so sure now.

First of all, I feel like I'm not good enough to come up with solutions for easier olympiad (Canada, old BMO, etc) problems and repeatedly catch myself glancing at the solution impatiently after awhile.

So I decide to work on computational problems, but then I read on many aopsers' blogs/posts about how you should be working a level up. I can get around a 9-10 on a recent practice AIME, but I don't even know if this is good enough to move on to olympiads as I'm likely to do worse on the real AIME due to test pressure.

One other problem I've been having is that I'm very inconsistent whenever I take computational tests, and doing olympiad problems isn't helping.

My problem with olympiad problems intensifies especially when I try combo problems. I just feel like because there isn't much theory involved, (as opposed to geo where u can p much just mem when to use different techniques) the solutions often lack motivation. Ppl say the motivation comes with practice but I feel like trying problems for a long time and then reading the solution doesn't give you much "practice". Also, I feel like the combo problems on Aime are bashy anyways :| I'm curious about how people overcame this and how to become better at harder combo in general.

Any advice? I'm planning on doing 60% computational 40% olympiads until after AMSP and WOOT starts and then I'll do almost only oly until around January.

Also oops wasted so much time this week How do u stay productive?????

AP exams done

by junbeom01pd2020, May 18, 2018, 5:06 PM

FINALLY DONE WITH APWH11!!!11!1!! I can say for sure that I will not be taking another history course in my life again (hopefully):coolspeak: Although I did ok in the course and on the exam (i think maybe), taking notes on the textbook was extremely time consuming and interfered with other things like math. I've been preparing for the apwh exam for the last 2 weeks and did not solve a single math problem lol. School is out next week for a school-wide trip that I managed to ditch so I will be doing a lot of math to get back into the habit of it and also to not be rusty before AMSP.

I'm going to UTD this year and will take C3 and most likely G3 but I might change that to NT2 depending on how hard C3 is. ik I'm going to get f ed over but I plan to put in a lot of work to semi keep up with everything as I rly want to get better at combo at the olympiad level. For G3 I'll just review EGMO and do more Lemmas (oops still on ch 5 wut)

These days I mostly focus on random problems from the contest section from easier olympiads or harder computational but some theory once in a while can also be helpful.

Update oly over aime??

by junbeom01pd2020, May 1, 2018, 6:06 PM

Its past 2 am here...
Been doing oly math recently (JBMO, older CMO 1s and 2s, older APMO 1s). I think what I'll do is just ignore AIME prep until a few months before it and just try to get better at math in general thru doing a ton of oly problems (+amsp+woot). That way I might be able to make the AIME feel much easier (I did do a few recent aime final 5s today and they felt a lot easier than before so maybe it's working?). It's basically my last chance for usamo and that's why i stay up past 1 every night to do math (screw ap prep lmaoo).
Things aren't going the way I expected/wanted them to but school is ok I guess...and plus it's more motivation
will post more in the future oops

I might get the following books
1. 113 geo inequalities
2. 109 inequalities
3. lemmas in oly geo
4. 112 combo
If anyone has experiences with 112 combo can you comment or smth?
I can solve most combo problems up to Aime 10 and some of the final five rn, and I will be done with cops inter combo (both book and class) soon. Should I get this for late Aime-early oly?
Im not sure about the level of this book and I couldn't find much about it online so...
