Introducing myself at AoPS, and what's your magic wand?
asuth_asuth   622
N 14 minutes ago by bhavanal
Hi!

I'm Andrew Sutherland. I'm the new Chief Product Officer at AoPS. As you may have read, Richard is retiring and Ben Kornell and I are working together to lead the company now. I'm leading all the software and digital stuff at AoPS. I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself! I'm really excited to be part of the special community that is AoPS.

Previously, I founded Quizlet as a 15-year-old high school student. I did Course 6 at MIT and then left to lead Quizlet full-time for a total of 14 years. I took a few years off and now I'm doing AoPS! I wrote more about all that on my blog: https://asuth.com/im-joining-aops

I have a question for all of you. If you could wave a magic wand, and change anything about AoPS, what would it be? All suggestions welcome! Thank you.

I just started my Intro to Algebra A class in March, but the class is saying that I completed some of the Alcumus assignments earlier than we had gotten the class?

9 New AOPS

Tomorrow will mark the transition to the new AoPS. Many feel that the new site is worse than the current one. The current AoPS is easy to use and is pretty comfortable, while the new one looks a bit uncomfortable, and creates problems for many old AoPSers. What do you think?

I think this is due to the Status quo bias.

'Tis true. Just for kicks, here is the thread discussing reaction to the website when it was last updated (to this new format). Notice how there are a few things mentioned in that thread that we enjoy or don't mind that were considered detrimental to the site when they were first released. I personally see both good updates and bad updates in this new format, but I'm pretty sure that since the entire fundamental organization of the site isn't being drastically changed (unlike, say, brilliant.org back in November 2013) I'll get adjusted to it after a while.

WOAH, this new website is totally cool.

What I don't like about it is the sharp edges of everything, It feels a lot more pleasing to me when all rectangles have slightly rounded corners.

In addition, I don't really like contrasting colors that much. The red really stands out a little too much for me.

Here's one suggestion:
In the old site, there was an option to view a PDF version of a contest to print it. That should be added here, too.

Sigh lost all my friends already, and it's hard to work my way around. I'd like to bookmark some old forums too :/
Is there any way for us to open the old forums for just a bit to retrieve some things?
And all the animations are gone nuhh

Hi! The first (and currently only) problem I noticed was that at the bottom of the community page, the list of online users says:

Who is online?
There are 5 users online, including the 1 registered members listed below and 1 other hidden registered users.
View Memberlist
Registered users online: mikechen

However clearly I'm not the only member online (other than that hidden one), considering how people are posting here. According to someone else, they see that they are the only member online too. Help?

EDIT: nvm this is fixed

In the old forums, mods/admins monitored to make sure threads were posted in the correct forum. In the new forums, with many subforums turned into tags, are mods/admins going to monitor tags instead? I can imagine tons of people will not be used to tags and will simply skip them, making posts in a certain topic (ie: American Mathematics Competitions, or Number Theory Unsolved Problems, etc.) hard to sort out.

I personally feel that the New AoPS is a lot more messy than the old one.
