Some users don't want to learn, some other simply ignore advises.
But please follow the following guideline:

To make it short: ALWAYS USE YOUR COMMON SENSE IF POSTING!
If you don't have common sense, don't post.

More specifically:

For new threads:

a) Good, meaningful title:
The title has to say what the problem is about in best way possible.
If that title occured already, it's definitely bad. And contest names aren't good either.
That's in fact a requirement for being able to search old problems.

Examples:
Bad titles:
- "Hard"/"Medium"/"Easy" (if you find it so cool how hard/easy it is, tell it in the post and use a title that tells us the problem)
- "Number Theory" (hey guy, guess why this forum's named that way¿ and is it the only such problem on earth¿)
- "Fibonacci" (there are millions of Fibonacci problems out there, all posted and named the same...)
- "Chinese TST 2003" (does this say anything about the problem¿)
Good titles:
- "On divisors of a³+2b³+4c³-6abc"
- "Number of solutions to x²+y²=6z²"
- "Fibonacci numbers are never squares"

b) Use search function:
Before posting a "new" problem spend at least two, better five, minutes to look if this problem was posted before. If it was, don't repost it. If you have anything important to say on topic, post it in one of the older threads.
If the thread is locked cause of this, use search function.

Update (by Amir Hossein). The best way to search for two keywords in AoPS is to input
[code]+"first keyword" +"second keyword"[/code]
so that any post containing both strings "first word" and "second form".

c) Good problem statement:
Some recent really bad post was:
[quote] $lim_{n\to 1}^{+\infty}\frac{1}{n}-lnn$ [/quote]
It contains no question and no answer.
If you do this, too, you are on the best way to get your thread deleted. Write everything clearly, define where your variables come from (and define the "natural" numbers if used). Additionally read your post at least twice before submitting. After you sent it, read it again and use the Edit-Button if necessary to correct errors.

For answers to already existing threads:

d) Of any interest and with content:
Don't post things that are more trivial than completely obvious. For example, if the question is to solve $x^{3}+y^{3}=z^{3}$ , do not answer with " $x=y=z=0$ is a solution" only. Either you post any kind of proof or at least something unexpected (like " $x=1337, y=481, z=42$ is the smallest solution). Someone that does not see that $x=y=z=0$ is a solution of the above without your post is completely wrong here, this is an IMO-level forum.
Similar, posting "I have solved this problem" but not posting anything else is not welcome; it even looks that you just want to show off what a genius you are.

e) Well written and checked answers:
Like c) for new threads, check your solutions at least twice for mistakes. And after sending, read it again and use the Edit-Button if necessary to correct errors.

To repeat it: ALWAYS USE YOUR COMMON SENSE IF POSTING!

Everything definitely out of range of common sense will be locked or deleted (exept for new users having less than about 42 posts, they are newbies and need/get some time to learn).

The above rules will be applied from next monday (5. march of 2007).

How many people actually get a flat 0/42 on jmo? I took it for the first time this year and I had never done oly math before so I really only had 2 weeks to figure it out since I didn’t think I would qual. I went in not expecting much but I didn’t think I wouldn’t be able to get ANYTHING. So I’m pretty sure I got 0/42 (unless i get pity points for writing incorrect solutions). Is that bad, am I sped, and should I be embarrassed? Or do other people actually also get 0?

Hi Everyone,

USA(J)MO is tomorrow. I am a Junior, so this is my last chance. I made USAMO by ZERO points but I've actually been studying oly seriously since JMO last year. I am more stressed than I was before AMC/AIME because I feel Olympiad is more unpredictable and harder to prepare for. I am fairly confident in my ability to solve 1/4 but whether I can solve the rest really leans on the topic distribution.

Anyway, I'm just super stressed and not sure what to do. All tips are welcome!

Personally, my school couldn't care less about math contests, and I had to do it all myself, but I'm glad they didn't help me, because it taught me how to work independently with occasional help from my parents. And by help, they gave you the material, the coaching, etc.

I would never have even heard about math competitions had I not gone to the school I did. They were how I found out about the AMC 8, then Mathcounts, then the AMC 10, and then the AIME when I made it. I would not even have found out about AoPS had I not seen my friend taking an AIME prep course.

I come from a school with a functioning swimming stadium, 3 full gyms, 1 huge performing arts centers, 2 soccer fields, 1 baseball field, 1 football field, etc. but where offering the AMC is "over the budget." Enough said.

My school didn't really teach me anything, but I was encouraged to study and greatly improved. So the school doesn't teach it encourages for you to study to do good on competitions.

Here's the thing about a lot of the schools that don't care. They don't care until they see good results... but that doesn't make much sense because it's hard to get good results without support.

Wait our school got 12th at mc states. I got 5th...
And the counselor can just say "there was somebody who won Nationals Mathcounts before." (the team won (TX D:))
And they congratulate me when I win JMO. And they still only really care about football.
Edit: let's put it this way: you know something's wrong when there's an 8th grader reading pftb in Precalculus while the teacher is talking.

At our school, it's all about APs and test scores.

In fact, the mathletes at my school had gotten so annoyed by the incessant focus on APs that we analyzed the school math levels of various people who took the AMC 10 at our school, and we had to laugh when all the people who are AP Calc BC in 8th grade (yes, that happens) get really miserable scores.

Our mathcounts club gets no funding or coaches
we are lucky to get a classroom that sometimes is not even available, which leads to a cancellation.

Many say that the school math curriculum fails to foster mathematical thinking.

Perhaps this is its greatest influence; it forces us to go learn things ourselves.

You cannot easily teach different ability groups in one classroom, but if a school has so much money they could easily give money and stuff to the math team, and you know let the people on the math team tune out in class and work together on math. If they aren't going to help, they might as well not force us to participate in class, and just let us take the final and sit in the class and work on math. Isn't it better for the teachers and school, lets kids to have to keep an eye on and less papers to grade.

We have this huge Math Club at my school, and it's really well organized. One of the 8th graders is representing CA at some National competition, and the manager of the club is coaching. Pretty exciting aye?

Now that exams are on, we have study hall for most of the day. SOme of my friends and I formed an unofficial math club. We don't do contest math, just random stuff (we worked out the probability of getting 100% on our exams by guessing)

Hello, I would be willing to pay for the contests myself. What's more important is that they have someone willing to proctor, and some to help organize the stuff.

You have to be able to sell the idea of math is cool to your school to really get help, not just to start a club. I mean sure food works for the big men and women like the principals, but they'll probably say no more politely that's it. How would you guys sell math. I would personally try to tell the principal how great and recognized the school would be if it did well, but I don't know how well that would work.
