Private Forum for Geometry Study
fossasor   249
Hi all,

I've recently been trying to improve my skill at competition math, but I consistently struggle with geometry. Since doing math is more fun and motivating with others, I've created the GeoPrepClub. This is a private forum to increase geometry skill and help others increase theirs: we'll have problems, marathons, and much more. This is similar to forums such as "AMC8 Prep Buddies" by PatTheKing, but is focused exclusively on this subject. We welcome all skill levels and hope those with greater mathematical knowledge can assist those lacking in it.

If this sounds interesting to you, sing up below and I'll let you know once I've added you. Although the forum may not have much now, that's because I've only just released it, and I hope once I build a community, It will be a very useful and motivating space for those interested in improving their geometry. The link is
here.

I look forward to seeing you all in the forum!

Make every integer between -24 and 81 inclusive with all four of the numbers 1, 2, 7, 8, using only addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and/or concatenation. Parentheses are also allowed. (Basically, using the same rules as AoPS's All Ten puzzle, but a larger range.)

Example (spoiler for one number)

Note

Edit: Feel free to post partial solutions as well! :)

Edit 2: As of post 75, this puzzle has been solved! (I haven't verified all the solutions, but I think they all work.) There's a full list of solutions in post 75, one for each number between -24 and 81; there's also a full list on post 84. Here's the list:
Final List
There's also a list of some alternate solutions on post 77.

Edit 3: Beginning on post 94, people are now solving the same puzzle, but using the starting numbers 2, 4, 7, 8 and aiming for every number between -46 and 60 inclusive (107 numbers! my search program had a bug).

Fractions created from coin-flips
Kempu33334   3
Bob is creating a game to use in one of his problems. It involves him flipping a fair coin some amount of times. We introduce the notion of trying to model a probability. Denote $f_n$ as the outcome of the $n$th flip. Then, we say a fraction can be modeled if it can be expressed as probability of some combination of $\text{or}$, $\text{and}$, equality, and addition statements. For example, $\tfrac{1}{2}$ can be modeled using the probability $P(f_1 = H)$, $\tfrac{3}{4}$ with $P(f_1 = H \text{ or } f_1f_2 = TH)$, and so on (a list of examples can be found below). Note that there can be multiple ways to model a single fraction.

Prove whether or not it is possible to characterize all fractions which can be modeled using a finite number of conditions. If so, provide that characterization.

Please help me with this problem :
There are a white, b black, and c red chips on a table . In one step, you may choose
two chips of different colors and replace each one by a chip of the third color. Find
conditions for all chips to be come of the same color. Suppose you have initially 13
white 15 black and 17 red chips. Can all chips become of the same color? What
states can be reached from these numbers?

Geometry problems
Not__Infinity   38
So i have bad Geometry intuition for geometry olympiad problems. That's why I have decided that should we create a forum for geometry study for people like me. Where we can explain concepts, and solving questions with each other. Also, if anybody who is pro at olympiad geometry is also welcomed as he/she will help us better bcz of experience.

If everybody agree, i will work on it :).

Also, if anybody knows these types of forum, pls invite me.

djmathman mock 2013 p12
alcumusftwgrind   5
Source: djmathman mock 2013 p12
whats wrong with my solution?
let $a=\log y$ and $b= \log x$ so $a/b=6$ and $(\log2+a)/(\log2+b)=5\implies \log 2+a=5\log 2+5b\implies a=4\log 2+5b \implies 6b=4\log2+5b\implies b=4\log 2 $

therefore $a=24\log2$

our desired expression is $(\log 4+a)/(\log4+b)=(2 \log 2 +a) / (2 \log 2 +b)= 26/6=13/3$

AMC 10/12 trainer
grapecoder   12
Hey guys, I created an AMC 8/10/12 trainer a while back which has a bunch of different resources. It saves statistics and has multiple modes, allowing you to do problems in an alcumus style or full exam mode with a timer and multiple solutions scraped from the AOPS wiki. If anyone's interested, I can work on adding AIME and more.

Here's the link: https://amctrainer.org
And here's the code (if anyone's interested): https://github.com/megagames-me/amc-trainer

Any feedback/suggestions are appreciated!

Add d or Divide by a
MarkBcc168   29
Source: ISL 2022 N3
Let $a > 1$ be a positive integer and $d > 1$ be a positive integer coprime to $a$. Let $x_1=1$, and for $k\geq 1$, define
$$x_{k+1} = \begin{cases}
x_k + d &\text{if } a \text{ does not divide } x_k \\
x_k/a & \text{if } a \text{ divides } x_k
\end{cases}$$Find, in terms of $a$ and $d$, the greatest positive integer $n$ for which there exists an index $k$ such that $x_k$ is divisible by $a^n$.

Periodic sequence with positive integers
thdnder   43
Source: IMO 2024 P3
Let $a_1, a_2, a_3, \dots$ be an infinite sequence of positive integers, and let $N$ be a positive integer. Suppose that, for each $n > N$, $a_n$ is equal to the number of times $a_{n-1}$ appears in the list $a_1, a_2, \dots, a_{n-1}$.

Prove that at least one of the sequence $a_1, a_3, a_5, \dots$ and $a_2, a_4, a_6, \dots$ is eventually periodic.

(An infinite sequence $b_1, b_2, b_3, \dots$ is eventually periodic if there exist positive integers $p$ and $M$ such that $b_{m+p} = b_m$ for all $m \ge M$.)

Avoid prime sum

Source: Based on https://atcoder.jp/contests/arc149/tasks/arc149_c?lang=en
An integer $n\ge 3$ and a $n\times n$ grid are given. We write down one integer to each of the square of the grid so that each of integer $1$ to $n^2$ are written exactly once in the grid, and no two adjacent square have sum prime.

Prove that this is always possible.

A sequence $y_1, y_2, \ldots, y_k$ of real numbers is called $\textit{zigzag}$ if $k=1$, or if $y_2-y_1, y_3-y_2, \ldots, y_k-y_{k-1}$ are nonzero and alternate in sign. Let $X_1, X_2, \ldots, X_n$ be chosen independently from the uniform distribution on $[0,1]$. Let $a\left(X_1, X_2, \ldots, X_n\right)$ be the largest value of $k$ for which there exists an increasing sequence of integers $i_1, i_2, \ldots, i_k$ such that $X_{i_1}, X_{i_2}, \ldots X_{i_k}$ is zigzag. Find the expected value of $a\left(X_1, X_2, \ldots, X_n\right)$ for $n \geq 2$.

I can't join the Math Jam right now. Is anyone else experiencing this?

(It says I'm not enrolled in a class, which shouldn't matter for joining Math Jams.)

[RESOLVED] TeXeR Glitching
WalterMitchell   10
When I was creating something in the AoPS TeXeR, and tried to output it as a bbcode, the "unrecognized server response" message popped up. Then, when I exported it as an image (a common trick to see the error), a very long script/error message came up. Lastly, when I updated a few things, this popped up (see below). Then, when I refreshed, my code was reset back to an earlier stage.

What happened, and is it fixable?

(i suspect this may be somewhat related to the extreme length of my asymptote script)

(EDIT: got another weird error message. attached)

AoPS randomly capitalizing tags

Sometimes, when I create a new post on my forum and add a tag, the tag's first letter automatically capitalizes the first letter! What is causing this, and is there a way to stop it?
