Bonus Simple Solution
To solve the problem, one way is to find the total area of the rectangle, and subtract the areas that aren't shaded from it to get the area of the "bat wings". The total area of the rectangle is 3 * 4 which is 12. The areas of triangles ABF and DCE are both 4*1/2 which is 2. There are two triangles so the area will be 4. Subtract 4 from 12, which is 8. Let us name the point inside the rectangle that is connected to the "bat wings" G. It is clear that the triangle CBG is equilateral, so the area is 1*1/2, which is 0.5.
