Why did you insert the word "likely" into the Putnam page: "a school whose team members placed 1st, 2nd and 20th would likely place lower than a school whose team members placed 6th, 7th and 8th"?

Because it is likely, but not guaranteed. They sum the scores, not the ranks, right? --13:12, 14 July 2006 (EDT)

I thought that they actually summed the ranks, and that explained the oddity of their presentation of the overall results (with everyone tied given the average of their ranks). The [http://math.scu.edu/putnam/rulescJan.html Putnam website] says "A college or university with at least three registered entrants obtains a team rank through ''the positions achieved'' by three designated individual contestants." --[[User:JBL|JBL]] 13:25, 14 July 2006 (EDT)
