Students in grades 6-8 are eligible to participate in the MATHCOUNTS competition series. It is composed of the Target Round, Sprint Round, Team Round, and Countdown Round (Countdown Round is optional and unofficial in Chapter and State competitions).

Nebraska MATHCOUNTS is divided into 5 chapters: Eastern (held in Omaha), Midstate (held in Kearney), Northeast (held in Columbus), Southeast (held in Lincoln), and Western (held in Scottsbluff). Chapter competitions are held during the month of February. Top individuals and teams from each chapter advances to the state competition.

The Nebraska state MATHCOUNTS competition takes place in March. The top 4 individuals advance to the National competition in May as a team.
