We can replace the letters with any numbers that satisfy this condition. It must be true for any numbers we use. Let $x$ = $5$ $y$ = $2$ $u$ = $2$ and $v$ = $1$. Plug in you numbers and get $13$ ÷ $2$ $=$ $6$ remainder $1$. Since $v$ = $1$, our answer is $E$.
