Minnesota ARML
The Minnesota ARML team, also known as the Minnesota State All-Star Math Team, is an organization for top high school mathematics students in Minnesota. Each year, two teams of 15 students are selected, along with several alternates. The two teams, Gold (division A) and Maroon (division B), compete at the annual ARML mathematics competition.
The team is run by the Minnnesota State High School Math League. Coaches include Tom Kilkelly (Wayzata High School), Bill Boulger (St. Paul Academy), and Mike Reiners (Christ's Household of Faith). A fourth coach is always selected, but the identity of this coach may change from year to year.
Selection Process
Students who finish in the top ten in the regular season of the state Math League, in the top ten at the State Tournament, or achieve one of the top ten scores in the state on the AMC 12 are guaranteed invitations to join the team. Since these three groups inevitably overlap, the coaches select additional students to fill the 30 spots on the team. In addition, roughly 6 to 10 younger students (usually in grade 10 and below) are selected as "Students in Training". These students practice with the team in preparation for future years, and some of them are invited to attend the ARML competition if team members are unable to go.
The team practices on three Saturdays in May in St. Paul. Results from these practices are used to determine the members of the Gold team, as well as which Students in Training will be invited to the competition. The Gold team is traditionally not announced until the night before the competition begins.
There are also three unofficial team captains, known as "Keepers of the Frisbee". They are chosen at the end of the ARML trip each year by the outgoing Keepers. There are three team frisbees, which are passed down to the new Keepers each year, hence the title.
History
The team was founded in 1987; the first coach was Roger Sadlowsky (Columbia Heights High School). Since then, the Gold team has finished in the top ten in division A 12 times, winning the national championship in 1997.
