The University of Texas at Austin is the flagship university in the state of Texas. Because of its strong academics and research potential, UT Austin is often considered a "public Ivy".

Admissions

UT Austin follows strict rules regarding the composition of its classes. Texas residents must make up 90% of all students admitted to a given class. Of these, 75% (67.5% of total students) must be "automatic admits" who meet a certain percentile in terms of class rank at their high school. As of 2023-2024, this is the top 6%. As the name suggests, students who qualify as "automatic admits" are allowed to attend UT Austin without further conditions on academic performance.

UT Austin admits students directly to majors. Certain majors are more competitive than others, and automatic admission does not guarantee admission to the major of a student's choice.

Colleges

At UT Austin, the college a student attends depends on the major to which he or she was admitted. The College of Natural Sciences houses majors in mathematics, computer science, statistics and data science, and the hard sciences. Engineering majors attend the Cockrell School of Engineering.

Tuition and expenses

As of 2023-2024, Texas residents pay a full-time annual (fall and spring semester) tuition of approximately $12,000, depending on the college. By contrast, out-of-state students pay around $45,000 for the same services.

As of 2023-2024, UT Austin estimates that students pay about $16,500 for housing, transportation, books, and supplies over the fall and spring semesters.
