Rankine is a temperature scale mostly used as a transitionary scale due to the fact that it shares properties with both the kelvin scale and the Fahrenheit scale. It's zero point is absolute zero, like the kelvin scale, and it uses Fahrenheit increments. This makes it useful when converting between kelvin and Fahrenheit.
