Harry S. Truman Scholarship
This program is for college juniors planning to pursue graduate degrees in public service-related fields (ranging from biology and engineering to traditional fields like economics and government). The program provides funding as well as career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, professional development, and other programs.
Good candidates demonstrate an extensive record of public and community service, outstanding leadership potential and communication skills, and a commitment to a government or public service career (see website for how the Foundation defines public service).
Requirements
Nominees must be:
- a full-time junior-level student pursuing a bachelor's degree at a four-year institution (see website for a more specific definition of 'junior')
- nominated by the institution's Truman Scholarship Faculty Representative
- in the upper quarter of the class
- a U.S. citizen or a U.S. national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Amount
- Up to <dollar/>30,000 in support for graduate studies toward a public service-related degree
- Invitation to programs such as
- Truman Scholars Leadership Week - introduces new Scholars to Foundation services and pathways to public service
- Summer Institute - 10-week long program in D.C. immediately after college graduation
- Truman Fellows Program - year-long program in D.C. after Summer Institute that includes placement in a public service job, a graduate-level public policy course, mentoring opportunities, and a community service program
