For the first competitions of Hawaii Mathcounts, there are 3 chapters: Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii (The Big Island). The top 6 schools and 2 individuals from the Oahu Chapter, the top school and 2 individuals from the Maui Chapter, and the top school and 2 individuals from the Hawaii (The Big Island) Chapter progress onto the Hawaii MathCounts State Competition. Therefore, there are (usually) 38 students participating in the State Competition.

The State Competition has an official Countdown Round which means that the four individuals that continue on to the National Competition is determined via. the Countdown Round. It takes the two lowest scoring individuals (out of 10) and puts them head to head and all 10 individuals work their way up to try to make it to Nationals. Therefore, the top 3 individuals' spot for Nationals are secured but the places (1st, 2nd, 3rd . . .) are not announced until each person comes up and competes. Therefore, it is very brutal because no one knows how well someone did until the Countdown progresses.

History
