Problem

Suppose that $f$ is a function with the property that for all $x$ and $y, f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y) + 1$ and $f(1) = 2.$ What is the value of $f(3)$?

Solution

Notice that $f(3)=f(2+1)=f(2)+f(1)+1=f(2)+3$. Also, $f(2)=f(1+1)=f(1)+f(1)+1=5$. Thus, $f(3)=3+5=8$.
