[poll/help needed - 10/12A, 10/12B?]

okay so I want to maximize my chance for math prize next year

personal stats:
c&p = algebra > geo >>>>>>> nt
I'm not sure if this is correct, but apparently 10/12A is more alg/geo heavy and 10/12B is more cp/nt heavy, though this is only something I heard and I don't even know if it's 100% correct or not
my 2023 10B score was higher than 10A score

personally I don't really care about jmo/amo because I'm pretty sure I don't have a good chance at that
I just want to get into mpfg and that'll be all

btw to anyone who participated in past mpfgs, how was this year's cutoffs compared to past cutoffs? were this year's cutoffs considered really high?

this year's cutoffs numerically were high but considering the relative ease of the tests, they were somewhat normal.

this year's cutoffs are also really weird just because they used way more tests - usually it's just amcs but this year they took all prev. mp4g competitors' last mp4g score, and everyone else submitted amc + aime

i think the amc cutoffs, because of this, should remain about the same as usual, so depending on test difficulty, i would expect cutoffs to remain about where they are right now - if the test is harder (99.9% chance), <120, and if maa loses touch with reality, >120 again.

safe bet is to practice until you can get more than 20 qs right on amc 10 with as few wrong answers as possible - a 120 will guarantee you on any test that is not criminally easy or had mass cheating (as far as i know, anyways)

i'd say 10a/10b as that's what got me math prize - i made by 10a but not by 10b :rotfl: but it depends on you - if you are stronger with trig and complex and think you could score >110 on 12a/b, pick one of those (again, guarantees you for mp4g)

i'd still suggest 10a/10b if you aren't super strong with trig/rou/complex/polar/all the stuff that comes with that (if you like that and you're good, def go for 12 tho; personally i hate it so i went for 10a/10b in the year i was really trying to make math prize)

hope this helps!

thank you both!
I think there'll be a higher chance I take 10a+10b just because 2024 amcs will be my last year for amc 10s. though I'll also look at amc 12 problems since I already learned trig/complex/polar etc. in precalc and see if I can do well

@contactbibliophile yes it did help a lot tysm
(also lmk if there's a name you want me to call you)

yeah and ig this year's cutoffs are normal considering the tests' difficulty, plus some unusually high amount of cheating factoring into this as well ig

oh yeah I found that weird as well tbh
ngl that's probably to prevent cheating (competitors' last mpfg score prevents cheating at least)
