hi
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:32:09
This year, AwesomeMath will be held at 3 different locations:
Location Camp Type Start Date End Date
University of Texas at Dallas Day & Residential June 4, 2017 June 21, 2017
San Jose State University Day June 19, 2017 July 1, 2017
Cornell University – Session 1 Residential July 3, 2017 July 21, 2017
Cornell University – Session 2 Residential July 23, 2017 August 10, 2017

The focus is competition math, but it's so much more! We hire faculty and staff from all over the world, for example, the leader of the Polish IMO team will teach at Cornell. Even our students travel from all over. There is a 4:1 student/staff ratio and this year we are offering a research opportunity!

We'd love to answer your questions.
Archimedes15 2017-03-21 19:32:42
Is it still possible for people to get into this summer's AwesomeMath Camp, or is the registration window closed?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:32:57
The registration period is in session now and open until March 31. There is still time to register.
teamoklahoma 2017-03-21 19:33:07
is bernoulliTX from awesome math
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:33:28
@teamoklahoma - yes, I work with AwesomeMath
62861 2017-03-21 19:34:05
how much does awesomemath cost?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:34:23
@canton that information can be found here: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/overview/tuition/
zephyrcrush78 2017-03-21 19:34:45
Do the day camp and the residential camp cover the same material?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:34:54
The day camp in San Jose is shorter than the residential camps therefore the material will be more condensed. But the curriculum is the same
Archimedes15 2017-03-21 19:35:28
If we are still in middle school, can we still look into the research opportunity?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:35:37
@archimedes: Research is meant for high school students since they are closer to applying to college
randomperson2006 2017-03-21 19:35:49
How do you register for awesome math?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:35:53
You can access this link to see the steps for registering: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/application/overview-faq/
orangekelp 2017-03-21 19:36:52
How many is a good number to solve on the admission test?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:36:55
That depends on the age.
hwl0304 2017-03-21 19:37:02
Can we apply after JMO cutoffs/lists are released, if we have qualified as this is guaranteed admission?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:37:08
@hwl0304: yes, it is an auto-admit, but you don't get the information until after the regular registration has passed on March 31st, so the cost to attend is higher.
iks92 2017-03-21 19:37:58
How do you register?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:38:11
To register, this overview will help: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/application/overview-faq/
randomperson2006 2017-03-21 19:38:42
What variety of courses does awesome math offer?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:38:50
We cover 4 general areas of math: Algebra, Number Theory, Combinatorics and Geometry. Each has 3 different levels of difficulty
randomperson2006 2017-03-21 19:39:07
How many courses can you take in Awesome math's camp?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:39:20
You can take 2: one in the AM and one in the PM
SomethingNeutral 2017-03-21 19:39:36
can i go to Awesome math if i am in 5th grade
hannahptl 2017-03-21 19:39:51
What sort of things do you learn at awsome math
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:39:55
@hannahptl: Besides math, and there are 4 different topics (alg, geo, combo, NT), you have a global experience with mathematicians and peers from all over. By learning in a collaborative environment, you really pick up on problem solving techniques much faster than on your own.
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:40:03
If you have the math ability and level of independence required, then yes.
DrunkenNinja 2017-03-21 19:40:19
is admission selective? How many tests should we take to apply?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:40:29
You only need to take one test.
leequack 2017-03-21 19:40:47
How will the research class differ from the other class? Will there be any lecture or just research?
Aspen 2017-03-21 19:40:58
Are all classes available at all times?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:41:02
@MTip, will you answer @leequack?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:41:17
Some Classes are available in the morning, some in the afternoon.
iks92 2017-03-21 19:41:25
oops I meant the admissions test... Where can I take the admissions test?
mimmim 2017-03-21 19:41:29
Do I determine which level to attend, or do you give a on-site test to decide?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:42:05
We do not give on-site tests. We let the students decide what classes to take based on the guidelines we provide.
mathmaster2000 2017-03-21 19:43:03
How much olympiad level material will be covered in the level 2 courses?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:43:06
Here is a link to a typical day: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/during-camp/daily-schedule/
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:43:07
@mathmaster, even in our level 1 courses, our instructors like to show kids where they are headed and will give the occasional Olympiad problem. This, of course, happens more often in Level 2 and all the time in Level 3
mathmonster21 2017-03-21 19:44:04
Where does the camp take place?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:44:19
Here is the link to the dates and locations: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/overview/location-dates/
thinkinavi 2017-03-21 19:44:24
what do students do outside of class?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:44:34
@thinkinavi: there are sports, mafia, games, office hours, four square, karaoke, poker night, etc.
Archimedes15 2017-03-21 19:45:00
Which levels apply to which levels of contests?
mtphaovibul 2017-03-21 19:45:02
Yes, @leequack. The research class will be some lecture (depending on the project) but most of the time you will spend time on solving the problem that the project supervisor
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:45:14
This is a very good link: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/during-camp/curriculum/#tab-id-3
merelephant 2017-03-21 19:45:41
Is there still time to register and take the test?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:46:02
@mereelephant, yes there is still time, regular registration is until March 31
PiDude314 2017-03-21 19:46:54
Is there a schedule of courses on the website?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:46:57
If you are in a class that is too hard or too easy you have two days to switch courses
randomperson2006 2017-03-21 19:47:15
Does one awesome math course last for the whole camp?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:47:44
@randomperson: you choose two courses that run the entire camp.
prm 2017-03-21 19:47:57
How many total students you take per place? (say in UT Dallas)
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:48:26
At UTD we had 190 students attending last year
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:49:39
Since we will have 2 sessions at Cornell instead of one, we will probably have 150 students at each Cornell session
popcorn1 2017-03-21 19:50:06
What is the advantage of going to AwesomeMath
DrunkenNinja 2017-03-21 19:50:13
What is your acceptance rate?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:50:16
@DrunkenNinja: Our camp by its very nature is self-selecting, so people don't apply unless they've done competition math and have the applicable scores. That said, many still get turned away if they can't answer the admission test questions at an adequate level for their age.
mathmonster21 2017-03-21 19:50:54
What is the age range for the camp?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:51:01
12 to 17
DaniyalQazi2 2017-03-21 19:51:19
can we see the instructors qualifications (for example, in cornell)
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:52:23
Here is a link to our instructors although this is not a complete list: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/overview/our-faculty/
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:52:25
The advantage of AwesomeMath: We pay for faculty from all over the world to teach YOU! It's a diverse classroom and there are people from Bulgaria, Romania, India, Korea, China, etc. etc. 4:1 student/staff ratio. TWO books for every student from XYZ PRess. AND IT's FUN!!! Our kids have so many other skills and we work to let them shine: sports, music, juggling, chess, and on and on.
hodori01 2017-03-21 19:53:25
are level 2 courses roughly the same level as aops intermediate? should we take level 3 if we are completed these?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:53:43
The level of AMSP classes are different than the one AoPS has
DaniyalQazi2 2017-03-21 19:53:52
Is Jmo level the highest level available, so is the course amc8 through jmo?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:54:03
WE have IMO level for Level 3
EasyAs_Pi 2017-03-21 19:54:16
What time will the students be working?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:54:23
Here is a link to our level of classes and descriptions: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/during-camp/curriculum/#tab-id-3
arkobanerjee 2017-03-21 19:55:23
What is the difference between test A, B, and C in difficulty level?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:55:25
@EasyAs_Pi: Morning class is from 9-12, and afternoon is 2-5. But not all that time is lecture, some is lecture and some is problem session. It's very active and collaborative
redpepper 2017-03-21 19:55:44
What's the hardest level you guys do? Like is there a camp that covers IMO level problems?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:56:01
A, B, C tests have almost the same level of difficulty
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:56:39
@redpepper: Level 3 is IMO level.
lego101 2017-03-21 19:56:54
how high should your amc/aime scores be to get in
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:57:04
We have our own admission test
DaniyalQazi2 2017-03-21 19:57:25
Will we be rooming with people? if so, will they be of our age and same gender?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:57:29
Even Level 2 has easier IMO problems. Each class is a range
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:57:57
We group in dorms by gender and age and class by math ability
redpepper 2017-03-21 19:58:07
is it possible for a middle school student to make it to USAMO and possibly farther?
Monishaa1 2017-03-21 19:58:07
will there be sample material
thinkinavi 2017-03-21 19:58:08
is homework given to be done after class?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:58:21
Most of the classes have homework
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:58:25
@Monishaa1: you get that info here: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/during-camp/curriculum/
merelephant 2017-03-21 19:58:56
Should you submit "half-baked" solutions for problems you didn't solve on the admission tests?
gymnast19 2017-03-21 19:59:11
Should I consider AMSP if my goal is to make USAMO, and do not plan on pursuing a career purely in math? Will it only benefit those who want a career in math?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 19:59:15
@merelephant: Yes! We want to see how you think.
lionblaze999 2017-03-21 19:59:36
Are roommates mandatory for UTD?
mathboy 2017-03-21 19:59:49
You should definitely consider AMSP. It will help you with your problem solving skills in general. This can be applied to other areas
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:00:02
@lion: you have your own room with a door that locks within a suite at UTD.
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:00:11
So you'll have suite mates
First 2017-03-21 20:00:34
Do you have to pay 25 dollars as an application fee or only if you mail the admission test?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:00:36
You need to pay the $25 application fee if you mail in the test instead of emailing it
mimmim 2017-03-21 20:00:44
Are there sample teaching materials to help us decide which level to take, if we are on the border line?
TheMrFatcow 2017-03-21 20:00:54
Do you have to do another admissions test if you got in already?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:00:56
No
hannahptl 2017-03-21 20:01:04
Will you learn only math or will you learn other things to?
supermessi 2017-03-21 20:01:50
If we apply and we make it, do we have to go?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:01:50
@hannahptl: The camp is about math, but it's also "practice college". You learn to manage more freedom, go to office hours, and be surrounded by incredible minds.
TheMrFatcow 2017-03-21 20:02:01
When is the deadline for the payment due in order to reserve your spot?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:02:14
You do not need to come if you made it in
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:02:31
@TheMrFatcow: March 31 is the registration deadline for regular admission
thinkinavi 2017-03-21 20:02:35
what classes are recommended for a jmo qualifier
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:02:41
Level 3 classes
iks92 2017-03-21 20:03:11
What is the gender ratio?
DaniyalQazi2 2017-03-21 20:03:52
what classes are recommended for someone who barely misses making AIME?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:03:55
You can take 2 Level 1, or one Level 1 class and the other one Level 2
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:04:06
@iks92: there are more boys than girls for sure, however, because of this, the girl group becomes really close! It's wonderful to see them make life long friends even becoming college roommates!
sketchcomedyrules 2017-03-21 20:04:39
What level are level 2s? Is there more hard Level 2 classes than others?
starkrishna 2017-03-21 20:04:55
i've already been accepted into awesomemath at utd. when will i get further information about the camp
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:04:58
If you paid the tuition your parents will receive a link with the registration forms for the camp
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:05:03
@sketch: this page will give you an idea of what the classes are like, look at the links at the bottom: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/during-camp/curriculum/
Christina26 2017-03-21 20:05:26
if u request rommate what is chance u get that person
Phie11 2017-03-21 20:05:28
aren't there like no girls in level 3 classes ever?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:05:28
A high chance as long as they are close to your age
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:05:45
@Phie11: Our girls are AWESOME and in all the levels.
himaximushi 2017-03-21 20:06:11
What would be the total cost of the class?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:06:24
Here is the link: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/overview/tuition/
einsteinium612 2017-03-21 20:06:43
Is the san jose camp shorter?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:06:51
Yes, by 3 teaching days
mamis511 2017-03-21 20:07:17
I made it in to AMSP, and on the schedule I noticed that the two classes I wanted to take were both happening in the AM, is there any way to get around that or no?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:07:30
You need to choose another class
lionblaze999 2017-03-21 20:08:13
What classes will Cosmin be teaching?
DaniyalQazi2 2017-03-21 20:08:32
Are there are any scholarships for making things like making AIME or USAJMO
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:08:33
@lion: He's teaching at all 3 camps, so it varies.
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:09:36
@DaniyalQazi2: We do not offer scholarships for AIME or USJAMO. But we offer tuition reduction for low income families
supermessi 2017-03-21 20:10:16
I made the AIME with a 124.5 on the A, but got five out of the six I did right, would Level 2 classes be too hard for me?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:10:25
Level 2 classes should work for you
Archimedes15 2017-03-21 20:10:33
Is there residential option at san jose?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:10:36
No
thinkinavi 2017-03-21 20:11:20
I signed up for my classes a couple weeks ago, when will I receive confirmation that I got the classes I selected?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:11:37
You can assume you got the classes you requested.
Archimedes15 2017-03-21 20:11:50
How hard is it exactly to get accepted into AwesomeMath?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:12:18
@archimedes: our admission process is used to determine if the student will thrive in our program. We want kids to struggle, but not be frustrated, b/c that is no fun for anyone.
randomperson2006 2017-03-21 20:12:44
Are the classes daily or on a rotating schedule?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:13:01
There is no rotating schedule for our classes
mimmim 2017-03-21 20:13:55
What is the returning / new students ratio?
AmcPerfect 2017-03-21 20:14:25
wait where on the website does it say whether certain classes are offered in AM or PM
lionblaze999 2017-03-21 20:14:25
Is mathcounts not a good way to measure f you are ready for AMSP or not?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:14:29
So many of our kids come back every year, up to 1/3rd or more. Some will even take a camp and then sign up to attend others in the same summer!
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:14:41
Not really. This is why you need to take the admission test
InflateGate 2017-03-21 20:15:04
Are the teachers going to be the same for the class every day. Ex. Teacher A will always each the AM Algebra Class, Teacher B will always teach the AM combinatorics class etc?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:15:32
@Inflate: yes, they form a strong bond with their students and work to help them progress through the material.
prm 2017-03-21 20:16:01
Curious as to how many instructors you have at UT Dallas?
iks92 2017-03-21 20:16:06
For level 1, what math background should we have? Around what AMC10 score should we get to go to level 1?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:16:17
@iks: this will help: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/during-camp/curriculum/#tab-id-2
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:16:36
@prm: 14-16 instructors at UTD
supermessi 2017-03-21 20:17:04
Can we fill out the application first and then send out admission test answers later?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:17:15
@supermess: absolutely
bennihana 2017-03-21 20:17:38
When will the admission tests take place next year? I recently learned about AMSP...
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:17:40
Regular registration is still open. We also have late registration
62861 2017-03-21 20:18:22
how rigorous is amsp?
AmcPerfect 2017-03-21 20:18:30
wait where on the website does it say whether certain classes are offered in AM or PM?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:19:03
It does not say on the website which classes are offered in the morning or afternoon
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:19:24
@Canton: 6 hours math per day, office hours, tests. It's a lot of work that is engaging b/c you are in a collaborative environment with lots of support.
mimmim 2017-03-21 20:20:33
How many students are there in a typical class?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:20:40
Depends on the level. Level 3 classes have few kids, Level 1 and 2 between 20 and 30
Peggy 2017-03-21 20:21:19
If I expect to qualify JMO by estimated AIME score, do I still need to submit recommendations and take the admission test by March 31? If the answer is no, will I be allowed to submit the missing material after the release of JMO list?
checkmatetang 2017-03-21 20:21:40
Are we allowed to make changes to our course selection form arbitrarily (like I edited mine last month so if I edited again today would you guys see and update accordingly)
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:21:42
Yes, we can see the update for your classes
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:21:45
Unfortunately, your application would not be complete, so there are late fees.
einsteinium612 2017-03-21 20:22:46
Can I still change the campus, and if I can, until when? (From San Jose to Cornell, already admitted)
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:22:57
You have until May 1st to change location
mamis511 2017-03-21 20:24:20
if we select courses too late will we be told that a certain course is full?
JasperL 2017-03-21 20:25:16
Does the material change a lot from year to year? For example, would you learn much new by taking the same course twice? Or is there like a cycle?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:25:22
@Jasper: It does if it is a new instructor, but even if it is the same one, they may focus on different things for a new class based on the strengths of the group. My kids attended the camp and so much changed with THEIR skills from summer to summer, they got more out of a class the second time around.
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:25:29
At each camp we offer multiple sections for classes that have many registrations so that we do not deny you the class selection
supermessi 2017-03-21 20:25:55
How fast will it take for us to know whether we got in or not after we submit everything?
paliwalar21 2017-03-21 20:25:56
I took level one clases last year should i take level 2 this year?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:26:11
@paliwalar21: look here: https://www.awesomemath.org/summer-program/during-camp/curriculum/#tab-id-2

prm 2017-03-21 20:26:46
For each class of level 1 which has 20-30 students, how many Instructors are there?
mimmim 2017-03-21 20:27:06
Will we know who our roommates are before we come to the camp?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:27:10
No.
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:27:22
@prm: if there is a class with 20 students, there will be one instructor and two Teaching Assistants.
cxe6789 2017-03-21 20:27:55
do returning students have to take the admissions test
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:27:58
No
zac15SCASD 2017-03-21 20:28:06
How big are the course sizes?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:28:34
@zac: it changes from year to year, but we maintain a 4:1 ratio of student to staff or greater.
randomperson2006 2017-03-21 20:28:37
What types of rooms are available at the Cornell site?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:28:40
double and single rooms
checkmatetang 2017-03-21 20:29:40
can we request people to be in same RA group but not same room?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:29:44
No
mamis511 2017-03-21 20:30:10
whats an RA group?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:30:41
RA = Resident Assistant and each RA has a certain amount of students in their care
randomperson2006 2017-03-21 20:30:45
Can I control if I am in single or double?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:30:54
You can request a single
iks92 2017-03-21 20:31:18
Under the "Course selection tips" page of the website, it always suggests you to pick two courses. Is this like a first and second choice or is this if you are going to multiple sessions?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:32:11
@iks92: you take two courses at every camp, but when you register, you pick your first choice and second choice for each of the two classes.
sketchcomedyrules 2017-03-21 20:32:18
At UTD are there roommates or only suitmates?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:32:20
There are suitmates at UTD
pythagoreantheorem 2017-03-21 20:33:14
If I do not know whether any of my answers for the application test are correct, do I still have a chance at getting in because I showed the way I thought and put my best efforts?
BernoulliTX 2017-03-21 20:33:32
We look at the whole thought process, not just the solutions.
cxe6789 2017-03-21 20:33:34
does our age determine what kind of room we get (do younger students get priority for single rooms?)
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:33:36
The age does not matter if you get a single or a double
mamis511 2017-03-21 20:34:07
how many roommates do you have at cornell?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:34:09
None or one
mathmonster21 2017-03-21 20:35:17
how many people request single on avg?
supermessi 2017-03-21 20:35:17
Do we fill out the form on a computer or print it out?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:35:37
You print out the test, scan your answer and email them to us
sketchcomedyrules 2017-03-21 20:36:30
can we type it up in latex and send it to you with a coversheet that satisfies the requirements
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:36:36
Yes, you can do that
Archimedes15 2017-03-21 20:37:44
Would we see you if we go to AMSP?
mathboy 2017-03-21 20:37:52
Yes, you will
