### NOVID: Using Math to fight COVID

Instructor: Po-Shen LohDifficulty Level: 1

COVID ruined 2020, but math can help! Do you want to help to bring your part of the world back towards normalcy? Math teams around the country are helping to develop a completely new approach to contact tracing to help make school reopening safer, using graph theory. Po-Shen Loh will talk about the NOVID app, which acts like a "COVID radar." For each positive case, instead of just asking the direct contacts to quarantine, NOVID tells everyone how many relationships away the case was (so "2" is a contact of a contact). This lets people actively avoid getting sick. This session will be an Ask-Me-Anything style interactive discussion about how this math-powered system works, so that interested students can have the understanding to bring this innovation to their communities.
