jwelsh2025-01-28 19:20:26 Welcome to the Canada/USA Mathcamp Math Jam! The Math Jam will begin at 7:30 pm ET (4:30 pm PT).
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:20:37 If you are enrolled in a course and trying to attend it, then you should leave the classroom now, click Classroom in the Online School dropdown, and then choose the appropriate link on the next page.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:20:43 The classroom is moderated: students can type into the classroom, but only the moderators can choose a comment to drop into the classroom. So, when you send a message, it will not appear immediately, and may not appear at all.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:30:02 Hello and welcome to the Canada/USA Mathcamp Math Jam!
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:30:10 Before I introduce our guests, let me briefly explain how our online classroom works.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:30:20 This room is moderated, which means that all your questions and comments come to the moderators. We may share your comments with the whole room if we so choose.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:30:29 Also, you'll find that you can adjust the classroom windows in a variety of ways, and can adjust the font size by clicking the icons atop the main window.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:30:40 Canada/USA Mathcamp is an intensive five-week-long summer program for high-school students interested in mathematics, designed to expose students to the beauty of advanced mathematical ideas and to new ways of thinking. You can learn more about Canada/USA Mathcamp at www.mathcamp.org.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:30:49 In this Math Jam, Canada/USA Mathcamp staff will lead a discussion about their outstanding program. Many AoPS instructors, assistants, and students are alumni of Mathcamp.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:30:59 For now, please hold your questions – they'll let you know when you can start asking questions. Also, due to the number of people attending tonight, they may not be able to get to every question.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:31:09 And now let me introduce our guests!
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:31:20 Marisa Debowsky (MarisaD) is the Executive Director of Mathcamp. She's been teaching Topological Graph Theory and singing pop songs at Mathcamp every summer since 2006.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:31:30 Maya Saran (MayaS07) is Mathcamp's Program Manager, where she is excited about creating the experiences of joyful math that Mathcamp is all about. As a mathematician, she is a Descriptive Set Theorist.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:31:40 Kevin Carde (KevinCarde) is the Assistant Director and Technical Lead of Mathcamp. He first started teaching at Mathcamp in 2011 before joining the yearround staff in 2014, and he'll be helping out behind the scenes tonight.
jwelsh2025-01-28 19:31:46 I'll turn the room over now!
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:31:50 Hi, everybody, and welcome to the annual Mathcamp Q&A! Thanks as always to the AoPS team for hosting us.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:31:59 The three of us (@MarisaD, @MayaS07, @KevinCarde) are here to talk about Mathcamp 2025, both the program and the application process. (You've got a captive audience with admissions officers, so this is a great chance to ask all your admissions questions.)
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:32:05 First, we'll say in a few short sentences what Mathcamp is. Then we'll spend about 30 minutes discussing the program, and 30 minutes discussing the application process, and then we'll wrap up after about 90 minutes total.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:32:21 So, Mathcamp: it's a 5-week residential math summer program. This year, it runs Sunday, June 29 through Sunday, August 3, 2025, and takes place at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon (in the northwest of the US.).
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:32:26 Really really frequently asked questions (RRFAQ), to get them out of the way:
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:32:32 Who comes to Mathcamp? We have 120 students per year, from all over the world. It's typically about 65 new campers and 55 returning alumni per year. Recent summers have been 45–50% girls, 50–55% boys, with at least a few non-binary students every year.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:32:43 Who is eligible to apply? Students ages 13–18 who love mathematics, and are excited to spend five weeks with fellow math enthusiasts this summer!
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:32:56 Scholarships? Yes! Every student (US, Canadian, & International; new and returning) is eligible for financial aid, and we have a large scholarship budget: everybody who needs financial aid will receive it. About 25% of our students receive full scholarships in a typical year, and we can even buy you a plane ticket. We won't let money prevent you from coming to camp.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:33:10 What kind of math? All kinds. A cool thing about Mathcamp is that we offer about 150 classes and projects over the course of a single summer, and you have complete freedom to design your own curriculum.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:33:21 What else happens? During the evenings and on the weekends, there are a zillion (ish) activities happening, and you choose how to spend your time.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:33:26 That flexibility and creativity – academic and nonacademic – are the defining characteristics of Mathcamp.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:33:33 How do I get in? We have an online application you can start at https://www.mathcamp.org/admission/. Basically, there are two ways we want to get to know you as an applicant. One is through the Qualifying Quiz, where you get to play around with some problems and we get to see your mathematical and creative mind at work. The other is through the About You section of the application, where you tell us about yourself, your interest in math and your math background. We are no longer asking for a recommendation letter; you just have to provide contact information for references.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:33:44 When do I apply? The deadline to apply is a few weeks away: February 26, 2025. (All applications received by the deadline get equal consideration, so there's no advantage to applying early.)
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:33:50 Let's pin those basics so you can always refer to them:
Mathcamp is for students ages 13–18 from all over the world
It will take place at Lewis & Clark College this year (it's residential)
The dates are June 29–Aug 3 (it's five weeks)
What makes Mathcamp unusual is the amount of variety and flexibility in the program
Lots of scholarships are available!
The application has interesting math problems, and the deadline to apply is Feb 26
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:34:11 Alrighty, let's get the conversation rolling! We want to get to as many of your questions as possible.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:34:17 My colleagues and I would like to meet *you* along with your question (we talk to students and families a lot by email, and this is a chance for us to talk with you in realtime!). Let's find out who's here:
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:34:21 What brings you here today?

MarisaD2025-01-28 19:36:25 Cool. Hello, other time zones!
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:36:55 When you're asking questions, here's a suggested format:
Name / Age / Location: Question
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:36:59 e.g.
River / 16 / Saskatoon: Can I study theoretical computer science at Mathcamp?
or
João / Parent / Brazil: How do you celebrate birthdays during camp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:37:05 (But that format is not mandatory - in keeping with the spirit of Mathcamp, just about everything is optional, and we'll do our best to answer your questions in any format.)
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:37:12 Okay, ready? Let's spend from now until 8:15pm ET on questions about the program itself: mathematical and residential life at Mathcamp; the people; the campus; the "during" and "after" of Mathcamp. (And then we'll switch over to discussing the "before": the application process and financial aid.)
Tjv2025-01-28 19:37:27 Only one alum here?!?!? That's surprising
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:37:32 Alums already know about Mathcamp.
aa10242025-01-28 19:37:35 I'm a Mathcamp alum!
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:37:38 Yay, hi!
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:37:49 Ah, that explains this question:
aa10242025-01-28 19:37:52 What is your favorite type of soup
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:37:56 The pacific ocean.
Tjv2025-01-28 19:38:09 who else can't wait to go to mathcamp
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:38:21 Me!! It's going to be my 20th summer at camp, and it's really fun every year.
infinity_beyond2025-01-28 19:38:35 What exactly is this camp? I've never heard of it?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:38:55 Right! So, in brief: it's a residential summer camp for people who love math.
ramadan20232025-01-28 19:39:03 Aariz / 12 / Lewisville, TX : Can you share a sample day by day schedule of the camp
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:39:45 There's almost no such thing as a typical day at camp, because the format is "choose your own adventure" – you decide what classes to take and what activities to pursue.
Guest 61322025-01-28 19:40:26 Brandon / 16 / CT: what's the age distribution in a typical camp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:40:41 Most students at camp are in the 16–17 range, but we have students as young as 13 and as old as 19.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:40:46 The distribution will give you a better sense, so here's some data:
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:40:50 On the first day of Mathcamp 2024, there were:
0 campers age 13
5 campers age 14
19 campers age 15
46 campers age 16
31 campers age 17
18 campers age 18
1 campers age 19
Total 2024 campers: 120
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:40:55 Going back a year – on the first day of Mathcamp 2023, there were:
3 campers age 13
3 campers age 14
19 campers age 15
35 campers age 16
41 campers age 17
17 campers age 18
3 campers age 19
Total 2023 campers: 121
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:40:59 Those are pretty typical distributions of ages at Mathcamp.
MathCosine2025-01-28 19:41:18 Are we allowed to apply if we are in 7th grade but will be 13 by the start of the camp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:41:28 Yes, you can apply while you're still in middle school! We use age rather than grade as our consideration.
yan242025-01-28 19:41:41 is it virtual?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:41:45 No! It's residential.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:42:01 This summer, it will take place at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. (The location varies from year to year.)
Guest 34302025-01-28 19:42:09 Marcus/15/Maryland: Does everyone have a roommate?
MathandKarate2025-01-28 19:42:09 Bella/15/Houston, Texas: What are the living arrangements? Do we have roommates?
Epiphaneas2025-01-28 19:42:16 Amy / Parent : Can you describe the living arrangements at the camp? For example, how many people share a room, what the bathroom facilities are like, and how you decide who is assigned to each room?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:42:31 This year, we have a mix of singles and doubles, so some students will have roommates and others will have singles.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:42:43 (There are no triples this year, I believe.)
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:42:55 The bathrooms are a mix of hall-style and single-user.
Pengu142025-01-28 19:43:06 Pengu / 14 / PA: Do we get to choose if we have roommates?
Voldemort1012025-01-28 19:43:06 Neev/14/Texas: Can we put somewhere if we would prefer to have a roommate?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:43:28 You do get to specify whether you would prefer a single or a double (shared with a roommate)!
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:43:36 And we'll do our best to honor those preferences.
Tjv2025-01-28 19:44:02 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino : Can we choose our roommate?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:44:29 You do have the option to request to have specific roommates (which we'll honor if they request you in return, so coordinate in advance!).
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:45:02 In fact, you can also request not to have a specific roommates (which we'll always honor). E.g., sometimes we get very sweet notes saying things like "somebody I know is also going to Mathcamp, but we both want to make new friends, so please give us different roommates!"
Pengu142025-01-28 19:45:39 Pengu / 14/ PA: How much freedom do campers typically have?
Lovesoccer12025-01-28 19:45:39 What time is bed
time?
Voldemort1012025-01-28 19:45:39 Neev/14/Texas: How much freedom/responsibility is given to campers? I know they are allowed to go off-campus and are expected to wake-up by themselves, but are there any other unique aspects like those?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:46:20 Good questions. Let me start by specifically addressing bedtime, and that dovetails nicely into the broader topic of the flexibility of the schedule.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:46:36 We don't have an official camp curfew; again, like everything else at camp, you decide when you're ready to go to sleep. We do, however, have some systems set up to make sure everybody gets the sleep they need. Some parts of our dorm have quiet hours beginning at 10pm; the others have quiet hours beginning at midnight.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:46:44 To help you support you in making good decisions about when to go to sleep: on weeknights, all the social lounges close at midnight (at which point you need to be in a dorm room rather than a common space, and just be sure that you're not keeping anybody else awake who is sleeping).
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:47:47 More broadly: students are expected to be ready to manage their own day-to-day schedules – waking up, choosing their activities throughout the day, and going to sleep.
Lovesoccer12025-01-28 19:47:50 Can you bring electronics?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:48:06 Yes: most people bring cell phones (good for calling home) and laptops (sometimes useful for math).
Guest 34302025-01-28 19:48:09 Marcus/15/Maryland: I don't like large social gatherings? Are there weekend social events, like a dance, that we're expected to attend?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:48:18 These are ALWAYS optional at Mathcamp.
mathmompa2025-01-28 19:48:24 Lucas / 14 / CA will we be able to request activities when at camp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:48:39 More than that: you can create activities at camp!
Epiphaneas2025-01-28 19:48:47 Do you have separate floors for each gender, or are they mixed?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:49:00 We have both single-gender and mixed-gender hall options, and students get to pick.
Guest 34302025-01-28 19:49:02 Marcus/15/Maryland: is there a place where I could exercise?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:49:12 Yes!
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:49:39 Lewis & Clark has nice, modern athletic facilities (including a fitness center and weight room), and indoor and outdoor pools; we have access to them while we're guests on campus.
Tjv2025-01-28 19:49:52 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino : What is the process to create activities at camp? Do you just go and say "I want to organize ..." and see who else is interested? Or is there an official process involving a JC or other staff member?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:50:19 You can collaborate with a staff member, or collaborate with fellow students, or just post an activity and see who shows up. (People will show up.)
Backbranch2025-01-28 19:50:23 Grant / 15 / Washington State : Could you give us some examples of activities (either planned or student created) that we could expect to see?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:50:47 Here are some absolutely random examples from last year that I grabbed for this occasion:
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:50:47 August Fool's Day, Balkan circle dancing, Bedtime stories, Character table sudoku, Cursed bedtime stories, Draw spherical symmetry patterns on ball-bit palls, Family feud, K-pop dance, LGBTQ+ hangouts, Make Italian sodas, Paint rocks, Play (or learn to play) Spirit Island, Rain watching, Real number trivia, Robot sock wars, Sing happy birthday to my mom, Song swap, Switzerland (the event), Word assassins chicken
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:50:53 In general, there are about a dozen random events every day, some silly and some serious, and for any interest, you'll find other folks who are excited to join you.
cyanhummingbird2025-01-28 19:51:01 Amelia/15/NC: Will there be music practice rooms, and can we bring instruments?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:51:20 Yes! We always reserve a rehearsal room on campus with a piano for choir practice, and arrange access to some rooms for practice. At Lewis & Clark, we set this up in their very nice music building, Evans Music Center: https://college.lclark.edu/departments/music/facilities/. We also have a keyboard in the dorm for practicing (with headphones).
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:51:29 You can always bring instruments (and many students do).
Guest 61322025-01-28 19:51:46 Brandon / 16 / CT: What's the schedule like for the weekend?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:52:27 On weekends, we run LOTS and lots of field trips! Like everything else at camp, they're optional, and some students choose to just relax (or do math, or both).
Tjv2025-01-28 19:52:32 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino : What are the differences between the Contrapositones and the Kernel? Do either of them require you to commit?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:53:15 Wow, very specific, I appreciate you. Contrapositones ("Tones" for short) is our camp choir: it's not auditioned—everyone is welcome—and does a repertoire of many genres.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:54:01 The Kernel is our pop a cappella group; it's auditioned because we want to check that all the singers are comfortable holding their own part if they're the only one on that part. The Kernel does pop/rock and nerd rock songs (think Jonathan Coulton, in the latter case).
FuturePanda2025-01-28 19:54:07 If we wanted to participate in an online summer program (eg, AMSP) would we be able to do it in the flexible time of MathCamp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:54:19 No, that's not really feasible: Mathcamp is a full-time commitment.
Epiphaneas2025-01-28 19:54:23 What happens if a student gets sick and needs to go to the hospital? Do you offer insurance coverage?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:55:00 If you get sick, we will take care of you! There are great local urgent care and ER facilities, and we have a residential nurse living in the dorm with us. Students are required to have medical insurance (and camp of course has its own insurance).
Guest 34302025-01-28 19:55:10 Marcus/15/Maryland: I know there are a dozen different events every day, but can I carve out maybe 2-4 hours per day of independent math studying time?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:55:30 You probably can carve out one hour per day, but 2–4 is impractical.
EpicBird082025-01-28 19:55:38 Tarun/16/TX How do we travel to Mathcamp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:55:53 Plane, bus, train, the Oregon Trail, bike, car....
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:56:20 No, but seriously: students typically travel on their own to camp, and we meet everyone at the airport / bus station / train station.
CheesieFoodie2025-01-28 19:56:53 Is it allowed if the student bring in music instrument ?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:56:57 Yes, that is allowed!
Backbranch2025-01-28 19:56:59 Grant / 15 / Washington State : What is the "homework" (well, not exactly homework) to activity time ratio? Can we somewhat control it ourselves, and do some classes have more out-of-class work than others?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:57:28 Good question, and you've answered it yourself: you can completely control the ratio.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:58:01 Sometimes, Mathcamp classes will have "required" homework, which means that homework problems will introduce new definitions or concepts, and in that case you absolutely need to keep up with the homework every day in order to keep up with the class. For most classes, though, the homework is for fun: it's a good way to reinforce the material, but not necessarily mission-critical.
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:58:07 (Each instructor will indicate in advance what the purpose of the homework is, so you can take this into account when designing your class schedule.)
Voldemort1012025-01-28 19:58:11 Neev/14/Texas: Does the Mathcamp staff meet/drop off the students at the airport gate or do they only come as far as the security checkpoint?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:58:28 For unaccompanied minors, we can go through security; otherwise, we meet you at baggage claim.
Pengu142025-01-28 19:58:32 Pengu / 14 / PA: Why is it impractical to carve out more than one hour of independent study time? Don’t you get a lot of freedom?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:59:22 That's a great question. On the one hand: yes, you have totally flexibility. On the other hand, Mathcamp is very busy and very immersive; you won't want to take time away from the many things happening at camp (both academic and social)!
Pengu142025-01-28 19:59:26 Pengu / 14 / PA: How about on the weekends?
MarisaD2025-01-28 19:59:41 The weekends are a little more flexible, but still QUITE full of activities.
MathandKarate2025-01-28 19:59:51 Bella/15/Houston, TX: At a math camp I went to in middle school, we had counselor groups of around 10 students. Do you have something similar where there is a staff member acting like a mentor for a small group of campers?
Tjv2025-01-28 20:01:09 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino : Is dropping a class in the middle of the week allowed? What about joining a class in the middle of the week?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:01:28 Yes, you can make changes to your schedule mid-week!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:01:45 You don't have to formally register for classes, so if you decide after the first day of a class that you'd rather do something else, you can just go to a different class on the next day. It's a little like how add/drop works in college: you can test out classes and see what you like. The instructors will be happy to chat with you in office hours if you missed the first day of a class but want to catch up and then join on the second day.
spoileralert2025-01-28 20:02:18 Ada/14/NY : I went to MathPath, is Mathcamp similar, harder, or a completely different entitiy
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:03:10 Mathcamp and MathPath have some things in common: the students love math, and we teach a wide variety of topics. A key difference is that Mathcamp is aimed at an older audience (ages 13–18), so students have more responsibility and more flexibility, both academically and socially.
Pengu142025-01-28 20:03:14 Pengu / 14 / PA: How do projects work?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:04:27 But in brief, a project is a way to dive into a particular topic in an individual or small-group setting (you choose) with a mentor, and to study/build/explore something you're excited about.
Guest 34302025-01-28 20:04:44 Marcus/15/Maryland: Who are our teachers? Are they college kids?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:05:20 The teachers are mostly math graduate students, with some postdocs / professors / professionals in the mix. They're AMAZING teachers. (The competition for the instructor jobs is fierce.)
Grace20212025-01-28 20:05:28 Grace/13/Canada: How is it different from other camps like Mathpath, PROMYS, etc.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:05:59 Hmm – at the risk of sounding like a broken record (because I know I keep saying this): what's unusual about Mathcamp is how much flexibility there is: both academically and socially, there's just so much happening every day, and there are so many options for how to spend your time.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:06:13 To say a little about the landscape of summer math programs: there are lots of places where you get to explore really interesting math and connect with like-minded peers.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:06:18 I think of these programs as three flavors of math topics: competition-oriented programs (like AwesomeMath, say); single-focus programs (like Ross and PROMYS and Texas Honors, which have a Number Theory curriculum, or SUMaC, which has two tracks); and broader programs (like MathILy and HCSSiM), which offer a variety of course topics.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:06:51 Then there's also the question of what type of classes / research / etc is happening, and what it feels like to do math at each program. For example, at Ross, your main activity is doing problem sets (pretty much all day); at MathILy, your main activity is doing math collaboratively, and communicating your ideas about math with your peers (in an inquiry-based setting).
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:07:08 At Mathcamp, you can do either of the above or something else entirely, and again, what's interesting is the variety of options. Some classes have a lot of homework, and other classes don't have any; there are inquiry-based classes, seminar-style discussion classes, and classes focused on proof-writing, or on how to give a math talk. You can do individual or small-group projects. You can teach a class!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:07:19 The idea—and really, this is the whole design of Mathcamp—is that you find the style that works best for you (maybe you already know, or maybe you try a few things to find out!), and you and your academic advisor create a plan for your summer that meets your specific needs and interests. (Here's more about that: https://www.mathcamp.org/math/academic_advising/)
Guest 74482025-01-28 20:07:25 Mari / 15 / Portland, Oregon: what sort of classes are offered? (specifically is their anything on algebraic topology cause that's what I'm currently interested in)
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:07:38 Ooh, we love Algebraic Topology, too!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:08:46 One important feature of Mathcamp is that there's no set curriculum – the instructors teach what they're passionate about. So it's too soon to tell what will be on the schedule this summer.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:08:59 In particular, we're hiring our instructors right now! Later in the spring, our instructors will start designing their classes, and we'll shape those classes into a full summer schedule. Typically, the list of the summer's courses gets finalized in June.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:09:00 Since the classes change from year to year, returning students always have something new to explore!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:09:14 Some things, however, are pretty steady from year to year: there's always a class that covers basic Proof Techniques, and we'll always offer some "Intro to…" classes that cover core material, like Group Theory and Linear Algebra.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:09:19 These introductory classes are the starting point for what we sometimes call "clusters": collections of courses on core topics in pure math, like Algebra, Analysis, Combinatorics, and Topology.
Tjv2025-01-28 20:09:27 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino: How would you compare and contrast this camp with HCSSiM?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:09:55 One contrast is size – HCSSiM typically has 51 students; Mathcamp has 120 students.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:10:29 Another is flexibility of class styles: HCSSiM really emphasizes a collaborative approach to doing math, and Mathcamp has a lot of different ways that you can engage with math (some collaborative, others not).
Tjv2025-01-28 20:10:34 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino: How do you sign up to teach a class?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:10:57 This is a project! Typically one or two students do this each year, and it's a TON of work but I hear also really rewarding.
Guest 34302025-01-28 20:11:01 Marcus/15/Maryland: can you choose to study very high and theoretical levels of geometry as a project, so to learn from an instructor one-on-one?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:11:04 Sure, yes.
Guest 74482025-01-28 20:11:06 Mari / 15 / Portland, Oregon: Do courses have formal prerequisites? if so, can a student who has self studied the prerequisite do the course?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:11:29 Many classes will have no prerequisites (other than Precalculus); others will require some serious college-level background. Self-study counts!
KrKiPi2025-01-28 20:11:34 Kristie/parent/CA: are college level courses taught?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:11:40 Yes: all of the math is college level.
Pengu142025-01-28 20:11:58 Pengu / 14 / PA: Can you continue working on projects after camp? Can you still contact/talk to your mentor?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:12:19 Yes! Instructors' availability after camp varies, but projects do sometimes continue into the year.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:12:46 Okay, let's take a few more questions about the program itself, and then we'll move on to the application process. (I see some application-related questions in the queue; I'll get to y'all in the second half of the event.)
RedFireTruck2025-01-28 20:13:00 how much math are we expected to know beforehand?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:13:17 We expect everybody to know Precalculus, and to be ready to read and write proofs.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:13:34 (Calculus is not required, but almost all of our students have taken it anyway.)
FuturePanda2025-01-28 20:13:42 How much does the program cost?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:14:00 The cost for our 2025 program will be between 0 (full scholarship) and $6,600 (paying full tuitiong), depending on financial aid.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:14:06 (That includes tuition, room and board, field trips, local transportation – everything except your plane tickets to Portland. And we offer travel grants for families that need help with the plane tickets, too.)
KrKiPi2025-01-28 20:14:11 over the course of camp, how many courses can you reasonably complete?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:14:30 Ooh, tough question. Most students take about 3 courses a week for five weeks, but it really varies.
Backbranch2025-01-28 20:14:35 Grant / 15 / Washington State : Was "Time: Academic, Unscheduled (TAU)" called that because of τ? If so, can I expect more math puns of the same high caliber at camp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:14:40 ABSOLUTELY
Guest 82752025-01-28 20:14:43 Do students get credit towards college?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:15:06 Mathcamp is purely an enrichment program. That means that we do not offer official credit, for high school or for college. This means that there are no placement tests / quizzes / tests / midterms / final exams, so that's nice!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:15:10 But most importantly, it means that students have full control over determining their own curriculum: each student chooses the classes, research projects, and other activities that suit them best, and you get to decide what you want to get out of Mathcamp.
Craftybutterfly2025-01-28 20:15:13 Ellie/12/California: I have not learned Calculus but I'm going to take Precalculus soon. Is this fine?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:15:38 We need our students to have completed Precalculus before camp starts. (But taking it in the year leading up to your first summer at Mathcamp is fine.)
WildFitBrain2025-01-28 20:15:42 what is the teacher to student ration
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:16:09 We have 120 students, about 20 full-time instructors and typically ~5 guest instructors per week.
FuturePanda2025-01-28 20:16:14 If we have an ongoing AoPS Course through the summer through MathCamp, would that work out?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:17:59 It depends on how much time commitment the AoPS course is. Typically, it's easy to make time for something that's flexible, like an hour a day of practicing an instrument or running; it's hard to make time for something on a fixed schedule, like an external class.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:18:11 We strongly encourage people to really focus on Mathcamp during Mathcamp!
ippac1323262025-01-28 20:18:13 can we play video games during free time?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:18:22 Sure, but you might have more exciting things to do at camp.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:18:38 Thanks for all the questions about the program, everybody!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:18:44 Let's spend from now until 8:45pm ET on questions about applications and financial aid: eligibility, the application process, scholarships. (And then we'll open up to any kinds of questions before we wrap up.) I'm going to hand if off to my colleague Maya for the second half.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:18:55 Hi everyone!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:19:04 I see a bunch of questions on the QQ:
FuturePanda2025-01-28 20:19:54 Would getting some progress on the problems be good to put on the application problems?
Borisaurus2025-01-28 20:20:11 How many problems are applicants expected to solve in the quiz?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:20:25 It's hard to say "you need to answer this many questions", because when we look at the entire Quiz taken as a whole, we're looking for more abstract qualities: persistence; creativity; sound reasoning.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:20:49 In broad strokes: most successful applicants do try every or almost every question, and make significant progress on several. But you'll find anecdotal evidence on all of the extremes: we have admitted students who solved only a few Quiz problems, and not admitted students with very strong Quizzes.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:20:52 What we're trying to read out of the Quiz is a little bit between the lines of the actual solutions: it's an understanding of the author's mathematical maturity.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:21:28 So yes, partial progress is worth something and you should include it!
CheesieFoodie2025-01-28 20:21:37 When considering applications, are regions a factor? As in are the amount of applicants coming from the same region limited to a certain amount?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:21:59 Admissions decisions aren't made on the basis of region!
cowstalker2025-01-28 20:22:22 Cowstalker/16/CA, what do you look for in a problem set solution apart from just solving all the problems
MayaS072025-01-28 20:22:35 Like I said, we want to see how you think mathematically!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:22:43 The Quiz is untimed because we've designed it to be more like a research project than like a competition, so we don't grade it like a competition. You can think of it as something to work on slowly, and at the end of the process, we look forward to reading what you've learned in solving the Quiz problems!
Borisaurus2025-01-28 20:23:39 What is mathematical maturity for the mathcamp staff?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:24:09 We like to see creative thinking, logical thinking -- lots of things count.
FuturePanda2025-01-28 20:24:30 What percentage students have USAJMO/USAMO qualification in their application?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:24:47 A lot of students have done competitions, but many have done none!
spoileralert2025-01-28 20:25:12 How do you get a scholarship??
MayaS072025-01-28 20:25:52 Our financial aid application is due at the same time as the rest of the application
MayaS072025-01-28 20:25:56 Every student (US, Canadian, & International; new and returning) is eligible for financial aid, and we have a large scholarship budget: everybody who needs financial aid will receive it. About 25% of our students receive full scholarships in a typical year, and we can even buy you a plane ticket. We won't let money prevent you from coming to camp.
Roselynchen2025-01-28 20:26:07 Roselyn/15/los angeles CA: is the problem set ever a barrier preventing the reading of an essay?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:26:19 No, we will read everything
cowstalker2025-01-28 20:26:34 should the proofs "show personality" and like have jokes in them (be informal), or is it a very formal proof one would see in a text book
MayaS072025-01-28 20:26:58 Just be yourself -- people have different styles! We might enjoy jokes but we'll still grade the math.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:27:18 And we like formal proofs too, but not everyone has experience with writing those!
KrKiPi2025-01-28 20:27:35 If you are accepted, are you required to attend? Also, is there a waitlist?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:28:16 No, you aren't required to attend. Just like everything else, this too is optional You can decline your offer (and a very small number of admitted students do.)
MayaS072025-01-28 20:28:29 And therefore yes, there is a waitlist.
cowstalker2025-01-28 20:28:43 is making competitions like USAMO or USAJMO a significant boost or does it not matter much
MayaS072025-01-28 20:28:59 The Mathcamp application has an optional box for you to tell us about your competition background, but it's not a major part of the application. (There are plenty of Mathcampers who left that box blank when they applied!) It's just one more way for us to learn about the kinds of math that you do. What you do in the Qualifying Quiz and what you tell us about yourself, mathematically and otherwise, are what’s most important to us.
Epiphaneas2025-01-28 20:29:09 What is the acceptance rate? How many applicants were admitted compared to the total number who applied?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:29:42 It's 7 to 8%, so yes, it's competitive
cowstalker2025-01-28 20:30:06 do we send a transcript in our application?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:30:20 When you apply to Mathcamp, we don't ask for transcripts or standardized test scores (because we don't think they will help us to predict which applicants are ready for Mathcamp classes). Instead, we use the Quiz and your reference to give us a picture of your preparation.
cowstalker2025-01-28 20:30:53 do people who usually full solve the problem set get in or do they need to go above that, if so what is mathcamp looking for?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:31:22 Most people don't solve all the problems! Full solutions on a couple and a few parital solutions are common.
cowstalker2025-01-28 20:32:24 what percent of people solve 5+/6 problems and get accepted in the program?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:32:27 Hmm, I'd say very few solve 5 or more problems fully. Most successful applicants do try every or almost every question, and make significant progress on several.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:32:39 But a strong quiz score isn't the only thing we look for!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:32:53 We also want to know who are as a person.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:33:07 We admit people, not scores
Tjv2025-01-28 20:33:25 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino: How much of my QQ solutions should be devoted to remarks?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:33:29 Great question.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:33:36 You'll have to use your judgement.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:33:51 Think of yourself as the reader - what would you find interesting and useful?
Guest 74482025-01-28 20:33:58 do you have any general advice for applicants
MayaS072025-01-28 20:34:12 Yes! If you don't get in, apply again.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:34:28 From the 2024 application season: 49% of admitted students had applied before (and some of those had applied several times).
MayaS072025-01-28 20:34:48 By contrast, only 20% of not-admitted students had applied before.
Roselynchen2025-01-28 20:34:57 is mathcamp interested in students who aren't necessarily completely math-focused?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:35:19 Definitely! Lots of our campers have other serious interests, academic and otherwise.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:35:34 And that's part of what makes camp so wonderful.
Guest 89852025-01-28 20:35:52 Do u like seeing solutions to quiz on paper or typed up using latex
MayaS072025-01-28 20:36:18 Do what you can, we just want it to be legible! We'd rather you spend time on the math than on the formatting
MayaS072025-01-28 20:36:29 So if you're new to LaTex then handwritten apps are fine!
Guest 89852025-01-28 20:36:57 If you want to talk about your awards like qualifying for USAJMO or such would that be in this secion of the application Optional: Tell us more about your mathematical context.
in the about you section
MayaS072025-01-28 20:37:07 We have an optional question about competitions.
spoileralert2025-01-28 20:37:14 How do you get a scholarship?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:37:44 Our financial aid application is quite straightforward, and it's due at the same time as the rest - Feb 26
MathandKarate2025-01-28 20:38:01 Bella/15/Houston, Texas: Roughly how many (new) students apply each year?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:38:15 Last year we had just over 1000 applications!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:38:22 And we expect a similar number this year.
WildFitBrain2025-01-28 20:38:50 Do you do calc based physics
MayaS072025-01-28 20:39:13 Instructors have the same freedeom as campers do - they teach thigns they're excited about
MayaS072025-01-28 20:39:20 And sometimes yes, that's physics
jlcong2025-01-28 20:39:32 How hard is it to make the camp do you need aime qual
MayaS072025-01-28 20:39:57 Nope! You don't need any competitions .Many campers have never taken part in competitions.
cushie272025-01-28 20:40:06 Are non-US citizens considered international applicants if they live in the US?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:40:24 Our admissions decisions don't factor in nationality or location.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:40:49 It so happens that about 15 percent of our campers are international every year.
Tjv2025-01-28 20:41:07 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino: How many references can we include in the application, Also, will it be preferable to have one of my past MathPath teachers as a reference as opposed to my current math teachers?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:41:30 You just need one person as a mathematical reference!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:41:51 Your mathematical reference should be an adult who has gotten to know you, both academically and personally, in a mathematical setting. This is the person we might reach out to if there's something in your application that we'd like to learn more about. (They won’t have to write you a letter for your application.)
MayaS072025-01-28 20:42:04 A person who taught you in another summer program is ideal!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:42:16 You’ll find more details and suggestions here: https://www.mathcamp.org/admissions/references/. If you have an unusual situation not covered by that page, email us at admissions25@mathcamp.org and we'll discuss individually what's right for you.
Craftybutterfly2025-01-28 20:42:28 Ellie/12/California: Can you submit an application late?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:42:38 No, Feb 26 is the hard deadline.
Alex-1312025-01-28 20:42:55 Alex/15/ Maryland: Do we need just a mathematical reference or should we ask our teachers for a full recommendation?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:43:32 We are no longer asking for a recommendation letter; you just have to provide contact information for references.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:43:46 We'll reach out to them if we need more information about your application.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:43:53 But they don't need to write you a letter.
Tjv2025-01-28 20:44:09 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino: How do I show social maturity in my application?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:44:31 You could talk about things you've done with other people in the About You section!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:45:17 We have about fifteen minutes left, so let's move on to more general questions!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:45:48 If you have more questions on admissions, have a look at our website or send us an email!
Pengu142025-01-28 20:47:00 What academic events happen?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:47:25 Apart from classes and projects, we have colloquia by visiting speakers.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:47:41 We have a weekly Team Problem SOlving event
MayaS072025-01-28 20:48:25 And academic events run by campers, for example, a camper this summer gave a series of talks.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:48:35 Oh, yeah, that was really cool!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:48:41 Campers are super awesome.
Craftybutterfly2025-01-28 20:48:46 Ellie/12/California: Are some instructors from different countries?
Tjv2025-01-28 20:48:56 what percentage of mathcampers return to mathcamp
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:49:21 In the most recent five-year period, 63% of our students came for 2+ summers, and 22% came for 3+ summers.
FamousKoala652025-01-28 20:49:41 WHen did this start
MayaS072025-01-28 20:49:51 Mathcamp has been around for over 30 years!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:50:02 But this Math Jam started at 7:30 eastern.
TheAverageMathMan1012025-01-28 20:50:06 im in 8th so am i eligable
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:50:08 Yes, you can apply while you're still in middle school! We use age rather than grade as our consideration.
KrKiPi2025-01-28 20:50:25 what is the latest date we will find out if we have been accepted or not?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:50:51 We will announce admissions decisions on April 17th.
Waitlist decisions will take place over the roughly four weeks after that.
Backbranch2025-01-28 20:51:11 Grant / 15 / Washington State : If you have one, what is your favorite number? (Real, imaginary, complex, p-adic, any number)
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:51:13 Wow, this gives me the opportunity to tell a joke. What was the hipster's favorite number?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:51:18 ....It's a really obscure number, you've probably never heard of it.
aaryaa20122025-01-28 20:51:27 Where is mathcamp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:51:36 We rotate around different college campuses! This year, it's in Portland, Oregon.
AxoLuna2025-01-28 20:51:59 If you all have extra time, I wonder if any of the jam leaders have a favorite bird to share
MayaS072025-01-28 20:52:06 Peacock
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:52:10 Crow
Aaronjudgeisgoat2025-01-28 20:52:19 Aaronjudgeisgoat/VA/15, do you get to sleep during mathcamp?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:52:39 YES, it's very important. Sleep is how you stay good at (1) doing math and (2) having fun.
FuturePanda2025-01-28 20:52:47 If we have other math-related questions(perhaps from textbooks), can we ask math counselors for help?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:52:48 Sure!
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:52:56 We all love talking about math.
Guest 34302025-01-28 20:53:09 Marcus/15/Maryland: My goal is to get better at competition math because I like it. For example, the AMC/AIME/JMO/IMO ladder. How can I use my experience at MathCamp to get better at competition math?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:53:26 It's not really a focus for us, but we do typically teach one problem-solving class per week.
Tjv2025-01-28 20:53:55 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino: I've heard that Projective SET is really popular at Mathcamp. Where can I buy a deck of cards for Projective SET?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:54:26 Hmm – we don't have them for sale to the general public. But there's an online implementation! https://www.mathcamp.org/2015/proset/
Craftybutterfly2025-01-28 20:54:34 Ellie/12/California: What is the best way to prepare for mathcamp
MayaS072025-01-28 20:54:51 If you're thinking about preparation for the application process, your best preparation is to take a look at past Qualifying Quizzes. We've discussed the solutions to many of the problems in previous Math Jams, so you can get some insight into the kinds of solutions that we're looking for. In terms of content, we only expect you to use the math you learned in high school (up through Precalculus)... plus, of course, a lot of creative thinking! Here's a link to past Quizzes: https://www.mathcamp.org/qualifying_quiz/past_quizzes/
MayaS072025-01-28 20:55:00 In terms of preparing for Mathcamp's classes: aside from getting very comfortable with the concepts from high school math, the best preparation is diving into whatever math is exciting to you right now.
MayaS072025-01-28 20:55:13 If you live near a Math Circle, that's a great way to be exposed to the kind of mathematical thinking that we do at camp, so that's an avenue you might consider to prepare for the academic curriculum at camp. Find your local Math Circle: https://www.mathcircles.org/
Guest 89852025-01-28 20:55:22 What percentage of people who go to mathcamp are jmo/amo quals and would u say a lot of people who go to mathcamp go to hypsm colleges. Also would u say like prestige/importance as an ec its same as ross and mathcamp
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:55:25 Our students end up at great colleges, but we don't take any of the credit for that: the kinds of students who come to Mathcamp are really passionate and driven, and usually they're already on the road to the colleges of their choice.
Guest 74482025-01-28 20:55:48 Mari/15/Portland, Oregon: Which is better, algebra or analysis
MayaS072025-01-28 20:56:00 Haha, it depends on the person!
MayaS072025-01-28 20:56:13 Me, I like continuous things
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:56:27 Oh, wow, we are so different, Maya! Algebra all the way.
Epiphaneas2025-01-28 20:56:30 Which airports are available for picking up for international students? Is Portland International Airport one of them, or are there other options?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:56:35 Yep, PDX is our airport this year.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:56:40 Also, WOW,
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:56:47 PDX was recently renovated and it is GORGEOUS.
Backbranch2025-01-28 20:56:51 Grant / 15 / Washington State: pi or tau?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:57:07 TAU! Because it stands for "Time, Academic, Unscheduled" and it's our office-hours equivalent.
Craftybutterfly2025-01-28 20:57:18 Ellie/12/California: What happens if we get sick in the middle of the camp?
MayaS072025-01-28 20:57:35 If you fall sick, we’ll take care of you! And we’ll also try to keep everyone safe. If you’ve got minor symptoms (you’re sniffling or coughing) we’ll ask you to use a mask; if it’s something more we’ll take appropriate measures to take care of you. We’ll have isolation protocols in place just in case someone has a case of something communicable, but we’ll try to get you back into camp activities as soon as possible!
Guest 34302025-01-28 20:58:09 Can you say a little more about what your "problem solving class" is?
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:59:01 Like all classes at Mathcamp: it's up to the instructor! You can see some things called "Problem Solving: ____" in the class archive: https://www.mathcamp.org/past_summers/classes/
Carl3332025-01-28 20:59:08 What do you look for the our resume?
Tjv2025-01-28 20:59:09 Tejo / 14 / Cupertino: what voting system is used to vote on fifth-week classes
MayaS072025-01-28 20:59:15 Getting to know you really does matter to us. We're looking for students who are a good fit with the style of our program -- who will make the most of the opportunities at camp and contribute to the camp community. What you write about yourself allows us to know you a little more as a person.
MarisaD2025-01-28 20:59:30 @Tejo: it's a black box
Roselynchen2025-01-28 21:00:03 what's your favorite platonic solid
MarisaD2025-01-28 21:00:17 Don't make me pick a favorite child! That's unfair. I love them equally.
MayaS072025-01-28 21:00:27 I can pick: cubes
MarisaD2025-01-28 21:00:38 Excellent, one of us is decisive.
MarisaD2025-01-28 21:00:41 Okay, everybody - time to wrap up. Thanks for spending your evening with us!
MarisaD2025-01-28 21:00:50 If we didn't get to your question, feel free to email admissions25@mathcamp.org and we'll be happy to continue the conversation.
MarisaD2025-01-28 21:00:56 You can also post questions in the Mathcamp forum here on AoPS; the Mathcamp staff will post replies, and you'll get student opinions, too. Here's the forum: http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/community/c135_mathcamp
MarisaD2025-01-28 21:01:12 Thanks again to the AoPS staff for hosting us, and to all of you for the good questions.
MarisaD2025-01-28 21:01:15 Have a good night, everybody!
MayaS072025-01-28 21:01:20 Thank you, all!
