Dear administrators of Art of Problem Solving,

I am Giedrius Alkauskas, Senior Scientific Researcher at Vilnius University. I am writing concerning the information on this page: https://artofproblemsolving.com/wiki/index.php/IMO_Problems_and_Solutions

I am listed as the author of IMO 1997 Problem 6. This was the first Lithuanian problem proposed at IMO.

In 2008 my colleague Kęstutis Česnavičius and myself created several problems and sent them (with the help of Team Leader and on behalf of Lithuania) to IMO Problem Selection Committee. One of the problems made into the competition. It is now listed as IMO 2008 Problem 3. Kęstutis formulated the question asking about prime factors of n^2+1 greater than 2n+k for arbitrary large k, and I improved this to the fine formulation of 2n+sqrt(2n). Since he was a freshman at University of Bremen, so for the purpose of facilitating him with his future career (which did come to pass, he is now a distinguished Professor at Université Paris-Saclay), I left only his name on the proposed problem PDF file. The whole solution, typesetting and submission to Team Leader was performed by myself (by the way, I still occasionally use the same Sony VAIO computer).

This story is genuine, which can be confirmed by Lithuanian team Leader (at that time and still the current one) Prof. Artūras Dubickas (arturas.dubickas@mif.vu.lt), deputy leader Prof. Romualdas Kašuba (romualdas.kasuba@mif.vu.lt), the head of Lithuanian Mathematical Society Prof. Remigijus Leipus (remigijus.leipus@mif.vu.lt), and Kęstutis himself (kestutis@math.u-psud.fr).

When this information is verified, I would respectfully ask the administrators of Your page to amend the authorship of IMO 2008 Problem 3 as "Proposed by Kęstutis Česnavičius and Giedrius Alkauskas, Lithuania".

Sincerely,

Giedrius Alkauskas Vilnius University Department of Mathematics and Informatics https://klevas.mif.vu.lt/~alkauskas/
