Problem

The sum of three consecutive integers is $54$. What is the smallest of the three integers?

Solution

Call the smallest integer $x$. We can express the sum as $(x) + (x + 1) + (x + 2)$. Solving, we get $(x) + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 54 \implies 3x + 3 = 54 \implies 3x = 51 \implies x = \boxed{17}$.
