Minnesota MathCounts is Minnesota's division of the national mathematics competition, MathCounts. It follows the standard format. There is a Countdown Round, although it does not affect the score. The Countdown Round is a single-elimination tournament involving either 12 or 16 students. In years when only 12 students compete, the four students receiving first-round byes are chosen at random so as to postpone the announcement of the top four students until the awards banquet.
