Problem

If $\sqrt {2 + \sqrt {x}} = 3$, then $x =$

$\mathrm{(A) \ 1 } \qquad \mathrm{(B) \ \sqrt{7} } \qquad \mathrm{(C) \ 7 } \qquad \mathrm{(D) \ 49 } \qquad \mathrm{(E) \ 121 }$

Solution

$2 + \sqrt{x} = 9 \Longrightarrow \sqrt{x} = 7 \Longrightarrow x = 49 \Rightarrow \mathrm{(D)}$
