i Information about Games forum
chaotic_iak   148
N Feb 19, 2025 by Spiritmist
Welcome to the Games forum! You can do pretty much anything related to games here. You may discuss some game, be that a board game or a video game or whatever else. You may host your own forum games to play with your fellow players. Anything related to games are allowed. (...as long as it follows other AoPS rules.) Here are some information to make this forum nice.

Tag your threads with "forum game" if it's a forum game, or "game discussion" if it's a discussion of some game. This is not a strict rule, but it helps sorting out the forum a bit. This also allows people to filter to one of the two tags to browse through forum games or through game discussions. (It would be nice if this forum is split into a discussion portion and a forum game portion, but I doubt it'll happen any time soon.)

If you want to discuss about a game, make meaningful posts. Simply saying "shaymin suxx" will not lead you anywhere. Saying "Shaymin Sky Forme sucks because it's doubly weak to Ice-type" is more helpful. This mostly applies to replying a topic. You can start a topic discussing about something without having anything meaningful to say (and ask for someone to start some discussion first), but you shouldn't start a topic to say something non-meaningful. If you want to just make silly posts or posts unrelated to gaming, there's Fun Factory (FF).

If you want to host (called "mod") a forum game, great! Make good games, or at least try your best to. Put some good content, even if it's simple. "Submit a number; closest to 2/3rd of the average wins" is a game. "Spam the thread as much as possible to win" is not a game; it's a FF topic. In addition, while this one doesn't exactly make sense, it's a leftover from the old times: games must have a definite end. Threads where you do something gaming-related, but it doesn't have a definite end, are not counted as forum games here; for example, "Accumulation +1" games ("post to score points equal to your post number") don't belong here because they usually don't have an end.

If you see something outrageous, report the post. Also, PM me to notify me, because I don't check reported posts often, but I do check my PMs often (it's on the PM feed to the right; the reported posts feed is buried deep in two layers of menu). Do not get involved with it; you reply to an offending post once, and soon you'll find yourself tossing insults at each other. Just report and move on (or ignore the post).

Missing post count? Posts here are not counted to your total posts. They were before the AoPS remodel some time ago, but now they no longer count. Which is for the better, really; this is a math site, not a game site.

Enjoy your time in the Games forum!

Some old threads:

Previous discussion thread, continued here

Old replacements thread, now no longer particularly useful since there are few forum games
-----

The original post when I started this thread follows.

Subject: I'm still here, kinda

I'm still here. Kinda. Although I'm definitely much less active than in my early days (around 2012-2013), where wonderful forum games proliferate. But I'm still a moderator of this forum, and judging from recent posts of other moderators, I think I'm still the most active moderator of this forum, even though I don't visit much. So, here are some points I'd like to make, one per paragraph.

If you're making a forum game, great! Tag it with "forum game" so we all can find it in the midst of all these stuff. There are a few simple rules you need to follow:
- The game must be not trivial. If it's just "solve this arithmetic problem to win" or something like that, it should go to Fun Factory.
- The game must have a definite end. If it's "post this and the next person continues", it should also go to Fun Factory.
- The game must abide the usual forum rules. If it's "kill this person in real life to win", you're going to jail.
That's it! The sole purpose is just to make sure the games are of good quality, and if people sign up, they can expect to complete it and drop out with no further obligations.

While at that, yes, this forum is so cluttered. Forum games are interspersed with discussions about various games (and some other frivolous discussions that should be moved to Fun Factory). (And speaking of Fun Factory, I don't understand why there's Frivolous Forum.) I should go ask some admin to have moderator privileges over the entire Games Forum collection. Yes, this is just a personal rant, sorry.

On AoPS in general. I don't visit this site so often. I mean, I do tab this site, so I take a look at least once a day, but still. I don't like how AoPS puts "Reported Posts" under a menu; I can't see it easily, compared to before the renovation (Feb 2015) where when I look at AoPS, I can see a bold "Moderator Control Panel" right away if there's something to do. So I will definitely miss quite a number of reports. So, if there's something you'd like to report, report the post and also PM me so I hopefully will notice it better.

Yes, I don't really know why I'm posting this either, instead of maybe replying in that discussion announcement. But eh.

i Replacements
ZetaX   471
N Jan 16, 2025 by RedChameleon
This thread is for game moderators and prospective absent players. Post here, if your game needs some replacements. If you want to fill an open slot, you can respond to the game moderators here, too.

Please always specify the game and give a link to the corresponding thread.

Note: it's up to the moderators/players if they accept your wish for participation, depending on the game it may not be possible. You also should be prepared to acquaint with the game before joining a game.

Supercell just dropped a new game called mo.co, do you think it will flop just like Squad Busters or will it actually gain some popularity and traction? Furthermore, do you think it is a fun game to play?
