Post counts

Just curious here...can someone tell me why you, or others on the site, care so much about post count?

It's fun to reach milestones. :D Post count is the only thing provided by AoPS that can be affected directly by the user. Maybe.

It gives you this wonderful sense of accomplishment to see how many posts you have. It gets tough to get that great feeling anywhere else on AoPS when you can't win FTW and don't have enough time to reap.

It is like chaotic said--reaching milestones (and effectively being superior over other users) feels good. Although it isn't that important, it takes some precedence in mind. I personally don't look or care about my post count, although I'll go "Hey! I've passed 1337 posts. When did that happen??..."

I don't see posts as a milestone. However, I do look at my rating as one. :D

But you cannot directly affect your post rating; it's other users who decides your rating (okay, depending on your posts, but it means indirectly). Post count can be affected directly by us (just post some problems you have when you're a few posts short from some milestone :P ).

That's why I care about my post rating, since I can't directly affect it. (I think it increased about 0.6 since I had 3000 posts)

People generally like to know how they are doing, and a few quick measurements (post count, post rating, Thanks given) here on the forums are given in numbers, so it's natural for people to pay attention to those numbers. Out of the three, only post count is public, so it provides a quick way for anyone to see where they stand in a crowd - I suspect many people who track their post count for this reason see it at least in part as a status thing. On the other hand, some people put a lot of time and work into each of their posts, especially if they're writing message board solutions for an online class, solutions for problems on the forum, or other thoughtful responses. In this case, post count can be a rough estimate of how much good work they've done.

In terms of "caring about your own post count," I think there's a huge difference between "letting a desire for a higher post count motivate most of your writing on the forums" and "having a rough estimate of what your numbers are but otherwise not worrying about them." I think most of the people in the latter category, myself included, realize post quality (tone and conciseness included) are way more important than post count itself.

Right now I don't care as much about it, but when I just joined AoPS, I thought post rating was very important because you get stars for it. So my goal was to be a "five star AoPSer" which I know seems pretty stupid, but now I understand. :P

Perhaps if you put in some other sort of rewards system, people wouldn't care about post count so much... just a thought.
