Order of Operations

by levans, Dec 30, 2012, 3:32 AM

D'oh, my mom doesn't know order of operations. Instead she knows PEMDAS. Grrr. PEMDAS should die. It is wrong. Teachers who teach it should feel bad. (Do you hear me Jeremy?!?!?)

I remember a time Paul taught us not to use PEMDAS, but to use "Penguins eat my dad as supper". :D

PEMDAS is certainly wrong, but for some people it's quite useful.

It's common intuition vs memorizing a pointless word that doesn't even explain order of operation properly. (E.g. multiplication and division come at the same time, etc.)

Take this equation:

$12\div3\times2$

If you use PEMDAS, the $3\times2$ part comes first, and you get $12\div6=2$. If you go from left to right, the $12\div3$ comes first, and you get $4\times2=8$.

Different answers.

No wonder mathematicians don't come from schools; PEMDAS totally ruined their work. :D

Things like absolute value and square roots are not included in this weird PEMDAS thing.

The concept of PEMDAS is essentially a notation and not a notion. Therefore, according to Gauss, we do not need it.
