Levitating Levans

by levans, May 15, 2019, 6:50 PM

OK everyone. I am absolutely terrible at knowing the rules and definitions of the English language. It's a pretty good bet you are better at these things than I am. So here is my question. If I use the phrase "Levitating Levans" what part of speech is the word "Levitating?" Is it an adjective because it's describing Levans? Is it a verb because "Levans is levitating" would make it a verb, or wait, is "is" the verb? I want to mix them and make it an adverb, but it's not modifying a verb or adjective. Wow, I'm really bad at English.

English is just bad in general. Not the users of the language.

Try using a language with more logical grammar.

It's called a participle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Participle . It is a verb acting as an adjective. (Note: I only know this because of learning Latin and Ancient Greek! :P)

Thanks! I'd click the thanks button, but I guess they don't exist on blogs.

LOL I'm pretty bad at grammar myself. And don't worry, you probably aren't bad at English.

Just check if it ends in -ing

If it's an adjective that ends in -ing its a participle

If it's a noun that ends in -ing its a gerund

Ty SAT class :)

For "Levans is levitating" the word "is" is a verb that (I think) is a helping verb and the word "levitating" is a gerund (I think) that is also a predicate nominative (I think).
