I think they can be useful! For instance, I added "moving points" tag to various problems I had done using moving points (not all though), so that it is easier for me (or anyone else) to search problems which may have a moving points solution. This is extremely helpful when you need problems for (say) including in a handout.

Actually, The Journey uses tags perfectly. It also uses a userscript to have the tags color coded.

RtR has a very specific tag system to keep everything clean, neat, and easy-to-find. Most forums have unstandardized tag systems, with a lot of untagged topics, so they're useless. That's why I designed a specific one for RtR.
