Tons of people still use two spaces and it annoys me to no end. It shouldn't, but it does. It's just one of those pet peeves of mine. Fortunately HTML, the language of the web, (usually) converts multiple spaces in to one space so it's not a huge deal.

I, for one, use two spaces just because that's the way I was taught. It's become so ingrained in my muscle memory to tap the space button twice, I just do; it's a bit harder to ignore that and use only 1 space. Is it wrong? Probably, but I don't see any real problem. It does conserve space, but it just looks more "right" to me to use 2 spaces. I don't know why I was taught this way in elementary school, and I'm sure if I was taught to use 1 space I would do it. But it just seems...inconsequential. There are plenty of better things to argue about; improve your writing instead of needlessly tinkering with the formatting.

So the first thing I remember is "Hasn't this been brought up on xkcd before?" (Yes).

That's highly amusing. You see, my dad apparently types two spaces and has has been doing so for forty years. I only learned about this when he complained that his android phone was replacing two spaces with a period and a space (quick sentence end). He was quick to point out that this was a badly executed feature until I told him that nobody does that anymore. He looked at me in shock. "You don't?"
Highly amusing.

How to banish the use of two spaces after a period:
Give everyone who still does so an iPod, iPhone, or Android phone. With quick sentence end eternally on.
Person 1: Hey, this is a scrappy feature; whenever I try to do 2 spaces after a period I get a period and a space.
Person 2: No one does that anymore.
