Problem

Last year COW got RICH by begging for money. He got a lot of money because, after all, he is only 4 years old. He paid $20\%$ in federal taxes on his income, and paid $10\%$ of what he had left to pay for AIDS treatment. He paid a total of $\textdollar10500$ for both expenses. How many dollars did he get from begging?

HCR solution

After paying his taxes and AIDS treatment, he has $0.8*0.9=0.72$ of his earnings left. Since $10500$ is $0.28$ of his income, he bummed a total of $\frac{10500}{0.28}=37500\  \mathrm{(D)}$.
