If I make a post here does it show up in the blogroll?

by v_Enhance, Feb 13, 2023, 5:25 AM

Well, here's one way to find out:

23616f70732d64697363757373

(Unless people are going directly to the blog I guess, but honestly, I don't even know if that's possible. I actually can't figure out an $O(1)$ way to reach this blog without memorizing the URL, because I'm a contrib on so many completely random blogs...)

Instructions for Creating a Contest Instance

by v_Enhance, Jan 22, 2017, 2:25 AM

This is an updated version of jgf's instructions, which appear to be out of date in that any users can now create contest instances.

Terminology
- A contest instance is a collection containing the questions from one year of a particular competition.
- A contest is a collection containing all of the contest instances related to a particular competition.
For example, IMO is a contest containing contest instances, such as 2015 IMO and 2014 IMO.

1 - Post contest problems
For each problem, create a separate new topic in the High School Olympiads forum. The first post should only contain the problem statement (source is optional). This is an example.

2 - Get problem links
For the next step, you will need to obtain direct links to each of the topics you just posted.
The links will look something like for example:
Quote:
http://artofproblemsolving.com/community/c5h1230491p6213572
Note that you want the URL of the first post, rather than the topic (you can tell this is correct of the letter "p" in the URL). To get the direct link to the 1st post, click on the #1 in the top right corner of the 1st post. That will bring up a modal from which you can copy the direct link.

3 - Create contest instance
Now that you have links to the problems, you can create the collection by going to your My Collections page and clicking on the + in the top right. In the modal that pops up, you want to select the Posts option.

This will bring up the Create Collection page. For the Collection Name, the format should be
<Year> <Contest>
The Contest name should match the name in the Contest Collections. For example, "IMO" instead of "International Mathematics Olympiad."

You shouldn't need to change any of the other settings, but here's how they should be set:
- Public/Private: Public (we want any user to be able to read this collection)
- Banned: None (no one is banned)
- Status: Locked (we want only collection administrators and moderators to be able to edit the contents of this collection)

Click CREATE in the bottom right. This will bring up the Collection Info page. (If you ever need to get back to this page, for example to edit the collection, click the Information icon 3 next to the collection name.)

Click EDIT CONTENTS in the bottom right.

For each problem, add it to the collection by doing the following:
- Set Select Post Type to Forum Post.
- For Post Label, put the problem number.
- For Forum Post, paste the direct link to the 1st post from before.
- Click ADD TO COLLECTION.

You may also add custom text, for example: "Day 1," "Day 2," "Final Round," "Morning session," "Number theory," etc.
- Set Select Post Type to Custom Text.
- Post Label is usually left blank. (This is label that is shown in the left box with the problem numbers.)
- For Custom Text, put whatever makes sense.
- Click ADD TO COLLECTION.

You can rearrange the order in the contest instance by dragging-and-dropping the components. After you're done, click SAVE.

4 - Important: Set privileges
You also want to set the permissions to your contest instance. Go to the Collection Info page for your contest instance. Under Permissions, in Inherit Roles From, start typing the name of the contest (the same contest you just added the contest instance to). It should autocomplete so you can select the contest from the list.

5 - Send moderator a request
Now you are all done! Once you have created a contest instance, all that remains is to have a moderator add it to the appropriate collection.

For contests that I moderate (like USA and Taiwan, among others), feel free to send me directly a link to your contest instance, and I will add it to the appropriate place. For other contests, if you post a link at the end of this thread then some other moderator will eventually handle it (but this is in my experience slower).

New Olympiad Handouts Up

by v_Enhance, Mar 6, 2015, 10:30 PM

I'm happy to report that, thanks to all the feedback I got from proof-readers, my latest three olympiad handouts are up. :) Here is the URL to all my handouts to date:

http://www.mit.edu/~evanchen/olympiad.html

The new ones are "The Incenter/Excenter Lemma", "How to use Directed Angles", and most prominently, "Orders Modulo a Prime".

Anyone want to help me proofread some new olympiad handouts?

by v_Enhance, Feb 6, 2015, 12:16 PM

Hey guys,

I have a somewhat substantive handout on orders / primitive roots and two shorter notes on directed angles and the incenter/excenter lemma. The first drafts are basically done, but unfortunately I haven't found the time to really proofread them, and with HMMT and classes I'll probably be quite busy for a while.

Thus, I was wondering if any of you would be interested in helping me read through these, so that I can get these posted in a timely fashion. Perks are that you get to see the articles a few weeks before everyone else :)

If you're interested, shoot me an email to $\text{evanchen}@\text{mit}.\text{edu}$ and let me know which ones you'd like to read; it will probably take until Sunday for me to get back to emails though.

New Article on Chinese Remainder Theorem

by v_Enhance, Dec 20, 2014, 1:21 PM

I've done a bunch of changes on my site, most notably including a new article I wrote during finals week on the Chinese Remainder Theorem. Here's the link:
http://www.mit.edu/~evanchen/handouts/CRT/CRT.pdf
Hope you guys like it :D

Also new is a list of resources that I recommend, so now I don't have to repeat myself on what books etc. I enjoy. :)

Geo Book ETA is very roughly December 2015

by v_Enhance, Dec 2, 2014, 4:04 AM

To the many of you that have been asking about my geometry book: firstly, thanks for all the interest.

I finally wrote to my prospective publisher (the MAA Problem Book series) demanding to know exactly what I should be expecting from the publication process. The reply I got back indicated that the next review I get will actually be a close reading, rather than just general comments like the first time (a relief), and that I can expect this to come by mid to late spring semester. After I respond to this close reading (which hopefully will not take long, considering how much polishing I've already done), there will be a formal voting, and then work with nitty-gritty details (copyediting, cover art, etc.).

Probably most important is the last paragraph:
Quote:
A reasonable expectation for publication could well be December 2015. Publishing your work is definitely the right choice; my board would not have recommended that you continue to work on it otherwise. You will be able to receive a modest return on your work as well as credit for it, and it will be available for many, many students to use.
So again, I have to ask you all (as well as myself) to please be patient. Ultimately the review process does make the book better and the publication does let me reach a much wider audience. And of course I'll make a huge amount of noise the moment the book is available for purchase!

Isogonal Conjugates!

by v_Enhance, Nov 30, 2014, 6:56 PM

Figured this might be of interest to some of you:

Note that most of my math posts are going to be posted on my WP blog now. I'll try to remember to also link them here though.

Publishing is hard

by v_Enhance, Nov 13, 2014, 1:57 PM

I just sent an updated draft of my geometry book to the MAA board for review again. The update probably contained on the order of 1000 edits and corrections as well as some large formatting changes, a new section on mixtilinear incircles, plus another 70 pages of selected solutions (very not fun to write), bringing the most recent draft to 404 pages long.

Unfortunately the board is not going to begin reviewing it until the start of the new year.

I can't wait til this whole process is over. The whole revision process has admittedly made the draft a lot better, but this project just keeps dragging and dragging and I don't know what to do about it...

Update on Olympiad Geometry Book

by v_Enhance, Sep 7, 2014, 10:26 AM

Follow-up to this post.

I've heard back recently from the publishing board at the MAA. The comments were somewhat brief, and basically amounted to "we like this project and would like to see it completed, but it will need some serious editing". There were a few particular suggestions for things to change, but none of them look too severe.

What this suggests (although the following is strictly my speculation) is that if I keep following through with rounds of edits, then with 80% probability the book will eventually get published. Unfortunately, what is not clear to me is exactly how long this process is going to take -- especially since I am doing my undergrad now, meaning I have actual homework to do (unlike in high school).

I'm still trying to formulate exactly how I want to proceed -- I think that I'll begin by making obvious changes (fixing typos that were pointed out, moving certain things around, expanding the hints), and then seeing if I can get a few professional editors to go through with a fine-tooth comb.

Sheesh, I totally should have seen this coming, anyways. Wish I had done more editing over the summer now.
