Complex determinants

by v_Enhance, Jan 12, 2013, 8:00 AM

worked on today's WOOT PotD! Kept on seeing "\bar y" while typing the TeX, though.

But seriously, determinants are a lot more useful than they get credit for. They let you hold symmetric information and do several useful row operations. (It takes some time to get used to, though.)

Like, to prove three complex numbers $a,b,c$ are collinear, it's a lot more natural to do manipulations with $\det \left(
\begin{array}{ccc}
	a & \bar a & 1 \\
	b & \bar b & 1 \\
	c & \bar c & 1
\end{array}
\right)
$ than to do something asymmetric with $\frac{a-b}{a-c} \in \mathbb R$. Not only that, you can lop off any common stuff by just subtracting the third column from the other two, and so on.

Good example: USAMO 2012 #5.

hmm today's PoTD is easy to approach by bashing (none of the constructions are very hard) but hard to approach without... darn.

I think it's not terribly easy to bash, either (but certainly easier than synthetic!), in the sense it's easy to miss an optimization in the setup and end up with something horrendous. (cough usaco). But maybe I'm just not experienced with complex numbers.

Hmm also darn I never noticed that about the reflection; I learned that formula from a WOOT handout that just solved this horrendous system of equations.
