Boo...

No one at my school knows anything whatsoever about math. It's disgusting.

Like this is what they think:

"Memorizing equations is not helpful, har har har." -aherm.

"You're in Algebra II? I know someone [who got a 24/46 at chapter mathcounts and 24 at state] in Calculus! She's better than you!! Har har har." [me=45 chapter, 41 state fail much??]

"No one cares about Mathcounts!" (While I am talking to one of my semi-mathish friends about a AIME or USA(J)MO problem.

"Solve for x! " (Hands me a paper with a triangle and a bunch of one-digit numbers on it)

"You talk about math, chess, tennis, ping-pong, + about 3 other things all the time." -Starcraft addicts that talk about surprise surprise! all day.

etc. etc. Hate this...

Anyone else have schoolmates like this?

Meh, don't think math is inherently better than other stuff and complain about how people you know don't understand it all the time.

(Fine, math is inherently better, but please just stop talking about how people don't know anything about math, when chances there are things you think are stupid because you don't understand them. There definitely are things like that, unlike you think every single thing is awesome, which would be pretty cool.)

To get other people into math, you pretty much have to find something else that you enjoy and people who are also interested in that, and then talk to them about math a bit (a bit.) after getting to know them and go convince them that math is awesome. Not going to find many people who understand anything at all about math if you don't show some stuff to people you know well.

rawr why did i type this up i have no idea

I always find myself questioning whether it's just math that's in this sorry state, or just about every topic mandated by the school curriculum. Unfortunately, I don't have any means of coming up with a valid conclusion, but I usually believe it's the former.

Definitely typical USA though.

Also because I'm in a good mood after reading this pythag011 and Wholikespi are now a contribs :)

I would rate pythag's post a 6, but I still don't follow it. I refuse to believe that anything is better than math. :P

Me too. Possibly CS, but I suck at it, so yeah, math.

I hate to say it, but I think eating and thinking are as enjoyable as math.

I disagree with v_Enhance. Schools have screwed up every subject, but math the most. No one does roots, etymology, and history of languages in Language Arts. We spend a lot of time identifying useless grammar topics. Who cares if this little phrase is modifying the subject or is in the predicate! Is it going to make the difference between a grammatically correct and an incorrect sentence? My teacher last year said, "Grammar is like math. There's lots of stuff to memorize." It's not her fault; she said that she didn't think it was a good idea we did all this grammar (in fact she was a really good teacher), but it shows that she knows nothing about math. Also, another non-math teacher was talking about problem-solving and basically said that knowing how do to word problems as opposed to other problems was problem solving. Word problems? How many olympiad problems are word problems? How many word problems have been in WOOT?

Intriguing. I wonder why the people at my school don't do that to me. (Pro tip: wear a math/science shirt at least three days a (school) week. It makes you seem smarter instantly, at the expense of any social life you may have had. Which you didn't, since you're using this site.)

:D
