Catherine Asaro Math Jam Tuesday, April 24

by rrusczyk, Apr 23, 2012, 3:34 PM

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT, renowned science fiction writer Catherine Asaro will host a free Math Jam at Art of Problem Solving. Catherine has won two Nebula Awards, for her novel The Quantum Rose and her novella The Spacetime Pool. (The Nebula Award is one of the most prestigious prizes in science fiction.) In her Math Jam, Catherine will discuss her career, her approach to writing, and give advice to participants who aspire to be writers. Here is an essay of hers about using her understanding of math to inspire aspects of her writing.

Catherine's an avid problem-solver, too, having been a member of AoPS since 2004! She holds a PhD in chemical physics from Harvard and has also coached a USAJMO winner.

You can learn more about all of the Math Jams at Art of Problem Solving here.

New Free Summer Camp On Math and Rationality

by rrusczyk, Apr 20, 2012, 5:34 PM

Several past IMO and IOI participants (including several AoPSers) are launching a new, free summer program that sounds very interesting. Here's the description of the camp they shared with us:
SPARC wrote:
Former international olympiad participants Paul Christiano, Jacob Steinhardt, and Yan Zhang have teamed up with folks at the Center for Modern Rationality to run a new summer program on math and rationality called SPARC (Summer Program on Applied Rationality and Cognition). The camp will run for one week and feature classes on probability and statistics, economics, cognitive science, and practical decision-making. The technical content will start with basic probability theory (covered at a much deeper level than is necessary for contest math) and progress to topics typically encountered at the advanced undergraduate level. There will also be colloquia on applications to areas such as machine learning and bioinformatics, and "decision-making labs" where participants practice strategies for effective real-life decision-making. More information can be found on the camp website. SPARC will be held at UC Berkeley from August 6th to 13th and is open to high school students, including rising freshmen and graduating seniors. The program will be free for admitted students, and scholarships to cover travel will be available.

New Night for WOOT in 2012-2013

by rrusczyk, Feb 28, 2012, 5:06 PM

Last fall, we had a lot of students in Asia ask for an Asia-friendly time for WOOT classes. So, we have added a class Friday nights, 7:30 - 9:30 PM ET (4:30 - 6:30 PM PT), which will be Saturday morning in Asia. You can read more about next year's WOOT here, and check out next year's WOOT schedule here.

Three New Summer Camps

by rrusczyk, Feb 27, 2012, 4:10 PM

There are now three more summer programs for math-loving students:
  • MathLinks Camp, a three-week program in San Diego, CA, for middle and high school students who are preparing for major math contests.
  • Mathematics Triple, which offers explorations of a variety of fascinating math topics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
  • Mathematica Summer Camp, which teaches students how to apply Mathematica to math and science projects.
