Martin Gardner died at the age of 95 on Saturday. He was a profound influence on me and many many other aspiring math students. Growing up, I had several of his books and they are all fantastic. If you've never read any of Gardner's writings, do yourself a favor and go down to your local library and get one of his books.

Ditto. Martin's recreational column on Mathematical Games ran from 1956 to 1981 in Scientific American. I'm old enough to have caught the tail end of that remarkable run in high school. My chemistry class had a stash of Scientific Americans in the back, and during class, I would study Martin's columns religiously, even when my teacher asked me to put them away. In those days before the internet and before AoPS and such, his work is what exposed me to the beauty in math, and influenced me to become a mathematician. I'll second your recommendation to math lovers, young and old, to check out one of his 70 fun books. Some tributes to Martin's work can be found here.
