Question: I have a sixth grade daughter who just finished Algebra 1 in school and did very well in MOEMS. What books and classes she do next, both for her math education and to prepare for MATHCOUNTS or the AMC?
Answer: She should adopt our Introduction series as her primary math curriculum. You can read more about the series here.
She can start with Introduction to Counting & Probability and Introduction to Number Theory (book or class, and in either order). These will show her important areas of math that are under-covered in most curricula, but which are very important in a variety of fields. Read more here about the importance of the areas of math presented in these texts. Parts of the Introduction to Algebra will be review coupled with harder problems than she saw in school, while other parts will be new. She won't need our Algebra 1 course, but should probably take our Algebra 2 course in the next year or so. All of these books and classes contain many problems from MATHCOUNTS and the AMC 8/10/12 series of tests, so she will be preparing for these programs as she develops her core math skills with our material. The Introduction to Geometry book/class should be the last of these, though some students do successfully proceed through the Introductory books/classes in a different order.
She can also practice with a couple of free resources on our site: Alcumus and For the Win.
