If Only There Were More Teachers Like This

I recently received the following from a teacher:

I am a second year mathematics teacher at a small private school. One of my primary career ambitions is to master a problem-centered instruction style as opposed to the standard textbook approach of 'plug and chug'. I want my students to experience the fascination, frustration but also triumph of solving mathematically interesting problems regardless of grade level and ability.

When I came across the AOPS website, I was hooked. I ordered several of the textbooks and I have my honors students complete a regular assignment of problems in the 'Alcumus' section, which is brilliant. What I love about the textbooks is that they are basically problems with commentary, encouraging students to explore and experiment.

Thanks so much for maintaining such a wonderful website and writing such wonderful books. They are an inspiration to me personally and professionally.

In my quite biased opinion, I think his students are extremely fortunate. His point about experiencing frustration before triumph is a subtle, but important one. Elsewhere in the email he sent, he suggested that the AoPS approach would work for a much broader range of students. That's part of our goal with Beast Academy, which we hope will both reach many more students and make more students ready, willing, and eager to face the rigors of AoPS.
